The downfall of a nation is inevitable when it fails to learn from the blood-soaked history and autobiographical pages of its greatest sons. Today, the unannounced terror and wall of censorship erected across publishing markets and bookstores in Bangladesh have claimed an immortal document of Bengali history as their ultimate victim—Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's The Unfinished Memoirs. Witnessing the assaults on publishers, threats to halt book sales, and the jubilation of mob "justice" makes one's heart shudder. Yet, the question arises: what is the reason to fear this book? Who is trying to conceal these pages, and why?
Reality is brutally harsh. Over the past few years, the very definition of politics has changed. Land-grabbing, extortion, and the lust for power have devoured morality. If the self-proclaimed ministers and leaders had read this autobiography with an attentive heart, they would not have had to author such shameful chapters as hiding in bathrooms or plunging their noses into water hyacinths to flee after losing power. Because Bangabandhu's blood was infused with ideals, and his political life was an unparalleled epic of defying prison, persecution, and death. There was no room for cowardice there.
This autobiography is not merely a book; it is the reflection of a man's patriotism built brick by brick. If this book remained widely available in the market, a portion of the younger generation or emerging political forces might have abandoned the dark paths of mob violence and extortion, becoming initiated into genuine patriotism. And right there lies the ultimate fear!
In this society plagued by unemployment, extortion has transformed into a highly lucrative profession. With political changes, faces alter, but the character of plunder remains unchanged. While student leaders of past decades traveled by local buses and launches to secure the rights of the masses, today's so-called revolutionaries cruise in multi-million-taka cars and indulge in five-star hotel cultures, proving just how detached they are from history. This autobiography awakens dormant human consciences and teaches individuals to stand tall against injustice. If this book were read in every household, people would question their own inner conscience—making overnight wealth impossible.
Thus, this sinister attempt to ban the sale of books is part of a deep-seated conspiracy. This society has repeatedly deprived its greatest heroes, drenching them in neglect. An amnesiac mentality—like standing on the soil of Kolkata and referring to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's ancestral home as "their" house—or the tendency to deny one's own roots remains our eternal curse.
Ultimately, these attacks to suppress the sale of The Unfinished Memoirs might yield temporary gains for the corrupt. Because this book has the power to shatter the greed and blind lust for power lurking in human minds. Plunderers know all too well that when conscience awakens, the reign of looting cannot survive. Therefore, this blind initiative to lock away an autobiography is merely the desperate sigh of a rotting system.
