A Double Blow Within Three Days

Recent times have proven to be exceptionally unsettling and challenging for Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Within a span of just three days, two major setbacks have severely called into question his long-standing international reputation and public image. On one hand, his name was removed from the speakers' list at the World Health Organization’s Berlin summit; on the other, Bangladesh's High Court delivered a landmark ruling regarding tax evasion exceeding 666 crore BDT. Together, these two incidents have triggered an unprecedented image crisis in his career.

1. Unwelcome at the World Health Summit and the Berlin Incident

Dr. Muhammad Yunus was originally invited as a keynote speaker at the prestigious World Health Summit 2026 in Berlin, Germany. However, severe negligence and mismanagement in the national immunization drive during his interim government's tenure led to a massive resurgence of measles in Bangladesh, resulting in the tragic deaths of thousands of children.

Facing intense objections from five European organizations, the World Health Organization ultimately dropped his name from the final list of speakers to avoid further controversy. For a Nobel laureate, such an explicit removal from a top-tier international forum marks an unprecedented and embarrassing first in the last two decades. Although WHO’s publication team claimed via email that Dr. Yunus opted out due to health reasons, his immediate departure from Dhaka to the United States via Doha cast significant doubt on that assertion.

2. Grameen Kalyan’s 666-Crore Tax Evasion and the High Court's Landmark Verdict

In addition to the international setback, Dr. Yunus faces a major legal crisis at home. The tax evasion case involving his organization, 'Grameen Kalyan', regarding 666 crore BDT reached the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.

In the full text of the High Court verdict published on October 12, the bench categorized the case as a "classical example of tax evasion." The High Court bench, comprising Justice Mujibur Rahman Miah and Justice Rezaul Karim, observed that Grameen Kalyan made every effort to deprive the National Board of Revenue (NBR) of its legitimate tax revenues and displayed deliberate defiance toward court orders. This verdict stands not only as a legal blow but also places a serious moral question mark over Dr. Yunus’s financial transparency.

4. Unexpected Protests at JFK Airport and Security Concerns Compounding the impact of the tax evasion verdict and the humiliation in Berlin, Dr. Yunus was met with unprecedented hostile demonstrations upon arriving at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York. Videos circulating on social media showed protesters targeting Dr. Yunus—who was in a wheelchair—shouting slogans accusing him of being a "terrorist" and responsible for child fatalities.

Reacting sharply to the incident, the Government of Bangladesh announced strict legal measures. Advisers to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued clear instructions to Bangladesh’s diplomatic mission in New York to coordinate with local law enforcement to identify and prosecute those involved.

5. Lobbyist Engagement and Diplomatic Calculus The current predicament mirrors the international image crisis Dr. Yunus faced in 2011 following the release of the Norwegian documentary 'Caught in Micro Debt'. While he enlisted the lobbyist firm Burson-Marsteller (now BCW Global) back then, he is now planning meetings with three additional top-tier US lobbyist firms to navigate the present fallout.

Analysts believe this diplomatic push is aimed at influencing the US administration, the White House, and the State Department to shield US-based entities like Grameen America and Grameen Foundation, as well as to exert political pressure on the current Bangladeshi administration.

6. Mysterious Political Equations and Unanswered Questions

Analysts are raising pivotal questions: while Dr. Yunus is actively seeking to hire US lobbyist firms to pressure the Bangladeshi government, why is the Bangladeshi government issuing strong statements in his defense? Despite severe allegations including tax evasion and administrative failure during the measles outbreak, the government's protective stance has sparked widespread speculation. How this conflicting diplomatic and political dynamic unfolds remains to be seen.
