সম্প্রতি দেশের এক শীর্ষস্থানীয় দৈনিকের শিরোনাম দেখে পুরো জাতির বুক গর্বে ১০৪ ইঞ্চি চওড়া হয়ে গিয়েছিল। ইত্তেফাকের সেই জাঁকজমকপূর্ণ উপস্থাপনা পড়ে সাধারণ পাঠকের মনে এক অভাবনীয় দৃশ্যের অবতারণা হয়—একদিকে আমেরিকার প্রেসিডেন্ট ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্প মুগ্ধ হয়ে খাতা-কলম নিয়ে বসে আছেন, চীনের শি জিনপিং নোটে ভুল হচ্ছে কি না তা নিয়ে চিন্তিত, আর ভারতের প্রধানমন্ত্রী মোদী চোখ বড় বড় করে শুনছেন মহাজাগতিক বাণী! জাতিসংঘের মূল মঞ্চে দাঁড়িয়ে প্রফেসর ড. মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস নাকি পৃথিবীর তাবৎ পরাশক্তিকে বিশ্ব পরিচালনার একদম নতুন রেসিপি বুঝিয়ে দিচ্ছেন!
কিন্তু হায়! অনুসন্ধানী চশমা চোখের কোণে আঁটতেই থিওরির বেলুন এক নিমেষে ফুস!
আসল সত্য উদ্ঘাটন করতে গিয়ে দেখা গেল, পরাশক্তি দূরের কথা, ঘটনাটি জাতিসংঘের সাধারণ পরিষদের মূল 'জেনারেল ডিবেট' বা মূল মঞ্চের ভাষণের ধারকাছ দিয়েও যায়নি। এটি ছিল জাতিসংঘ সদর দপ্তরের কোনো এক পাশের ঘরে আয়োজিত “Social Business, Youth and Technology” শীর্ষক একটি হাই-লেভেল 'সাইড ইভেন্ট' বা পার্শ্ব-আয়োজন।

আজকের বাংলাদেশের যে সুবিশাল অর্থনৈতিক কলেবর, তার পাশে ভুটান কিংবা তিমুর-লেস্তের অর্থনীতির তুলনা করা মানে হাতির পাশে কিউট পুতুল বসিয়ে দেওয়ার মতো! অথচ আমাদের দেশীয় সংবাদমাধ্যমের উপস্থাপনার চাতুর্যে মনে হচ্ছিল যেন বৈশ্বিক অর্থনীতির জি-৭ (G7) সম্মেলন কাঁপিয়ে দিলেন আমাদের ডক্টর সাব!
অবশ্যই অনুষ্ঠান হয়েছে, জাতিসংঘ সদর দফতরেই হয়েছে, প্রধান উপদেষ্টা বক্তব্যও রেখেছেন এবং সেখানে অন্য দেশের সরকারপ্রধানও ছিলেন—কথা শতভাগ সত্যি। কিন্তু মূল প্রশ্ন হলো, সাধারণ ডাল-ভাত টাইপের একটা ‘সাইড ইভেন্ট’-কে এমনভাবে বিরিয়ানির সাজে পরিবেশন করার মহতী উদ্দেশ্যটি কী? সাধারণ পাঠক কেন মনে করবেন যে জাতিসংঘের মূল মঞ্চে বিশ্ব মোড়লদের হাঁটু কাঁপিয়ে ঐতিহাসিক ভাষণ দেওয়া হয়ে গেছে?

Reading the headline of a leading national daily recently, the entire nation's chest swelled to a proud 104 inches! Ittefaq’s grand and lavish presentation conjured an unimaginable scene in the mind of the average reader—on one side, US President Donald Trump sitting mesmerized with a notebook and pen, China’s Xi Jinping anxiously checking if he misheard a note, and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi wide-eyed, taking in cosmic wisdom! Standing on the main stage of the United Nations, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus was supposedly breaking down a brand-new recipe for running the world to every superpower on Earth!
Alas! The moment investigative glasses were put on, the theory’s balloon went poof in an instant.
Digging for the truth revealed that, let alone superpowers, the event didn't go anywhere near the UN General Assembly's main 'General Debate' or the main stage address. It was merely a high-level 'side event' organized in a side room at UN Headquarters titled “Social Business, Youth and Technology.”
Examining the guest list sheds even more light on the reality. Front and center among the honorable guests were the respected President of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta, and the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay. Undeniably, they are highly venerable individuals in their own right. However, opening the ledger of reality to calculate GDP, the entire fairytale collapses like a house of cards.
Comparing the economies of Bhutan or Timor-Leste to the sheer size of today’s Bangladeshi economy is like placing a cute little toy next to an elephant! Yet, through the clever presentation of our local news media, one would think our "Doctor Saab" had just shaken the foundations of a G7 global economic summit!
To be fair, the event did take place, it was indeed at UN Headquarters, the Chief Adviser did deliver a speech, and heads of government from other nations were present—100% true. But the main question is: what was the noble purpose behind dressing up a routine, plain 'rice-and-lentils' side event like a royal biryani dish? Why should a general reader be led to believe that a historic address was delivered on the UN's main stage, making the knees of global superpowers tremble?
After reading this fairy-tale-like news report, a unique piece of wisdom has been added to the conscious reader's bag: “Grabbing a microphone and two speakers inside the UN building does not automatically turn it into a historic main-stage address at the UN General Assembly!” Ending the drama of pretending to be the first-bench topper while sitting on the side-bench and maintaining true journalistic objectivity is the real call of the hour.
