As soon as I crossed the threshold of high school, the slogan I raised with all my heart—"We will break the locks of the jail, we will bring back Sheikh Mujib"—still ripples through my heart in this twilight of my life. Seeing Bangabandhu for the first time at the ghats of the Padma, Meghna, and Jamuna while I was in the eighth grade, and his historic speech of 1973, still ring in my ears. But that fateful night of August 15, 1975, snatched away the light from our skies forever, plunging the nation into deep darkness.
Fortunately, being abroad, the two sisters—Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana—survived. When she said at that rain-drenched sea of people on Manik Mia Avenue on May 17, 1981, "I want to bring a smile to the faces of the distressed people of Bengal as your sister, as your daughter..."—from that very day, a new journey of our tears and love began.
Today, having crossed that difficult, pebble-strewn path, she is our pride, our inspiration. By ousting military misrule to restore democracy, ensuring justice for the assassination of Bangabandhu, and hanging the war criminals, she has freed the nation from its stigma. The Padma Bridge is no longer just a structure of brick and stone; it is a living symbol of her indomitable courage and wisdom. By kicking away hundreds of conspiracies by the World Bank and constructing this world-conquering bridge with our own country's funds, she has proven that Bengalis never give up.
Today, when tears of joy well up in the corners of the eyes of the people of the southern region while crossing the Padma River in six minutes, the history of her lifelong struggle lies behind it. Starting from 1997, by providing shelter for over half a million landless families, she has proven how to shelter a nation with a mother's affection. Her love for animals at Ganabhaban or the countless untold stories of secretly bringing a smile to the faces of helpless people deeply overflow our hearts.
Today, at this moment of her birth anniversary, my heart grows heavy with an unknown pain. I recall that history, when at the time of Joy's birth, the Father of the Nation was imprisoned in a dark cell, and an imprisoned Bangamata was struggling on a hospital bed. What can our tribute be on the birthday of those whose entire family sacrificed their lives for the country?
What else do we have to give on this birthday? Only two drops of tears from the depths of the heart, endless gratitude, and boundless love. O People's Leader, O Deliverer of the Bengalis, raising our hands in prayer to the Almighty for your long life and good health—may you keep us sheltered for a long time. Humble respect and love on your birthday.
