একদিকে জীবনসঙ্গীর চিরবিদায়, অন্যদিকে কারাগারের অন্ধ প্রকোষ্ঠে বন্দি জীবন—রাজনীতির নির্মম বাস্তবের মাঝে এক ট্র্যাজিক অধ্যায়ের সমাপ্তি ঘটলো। কোনো শেষ কথা হলো না, হলো না শেষ দেখাও। না ফেরার দেশে চলে গেলেন সুপ্রিম কোর্টের জ্যেষ্ঠ আইনজীবী ব্যারিস্টার তৌফিক নেওয়াজ (ইন্নালিল্লাহি ওয়া ইন্না ইলাইহি রাজিঊন)। মঙ্গলবার রাতে রাজধানীর একটি হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থায় শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেন তিনি।
এক কঠিন ও হৃদয়বিদারক পরিস্থিতির মুখোমুখি দাঁড়িয়ে আজ তাঁদের সন্তান। একদিকে হাসপাতালে বাবার নিথর দেহ, অন্যদিকে বন্দি মাকে বাবার শেষ বিদায়ে এক নজর দেখানোর ব্যাকুল আকুতি। পিতৃহারা সন্তানের এই বুকফাটা কান্না ও একা লড়াইয়ের দৃশ্য যেকোনো বিবেকবান মানুষকে নাড়া দেবে।
• আইনি ও বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিক জীবনের উজ্জ্বল ক্যারিয়ার: ব্যারিস্টার তৌফিক নেওয়াজ ছিলেন আন্তর্জাতিক মানের একজন সুপ্রসিদ্ধ আইনজীবী ও গবেষক। অক্সফোর্ডের ওয়াধাম কলেজে অধ্যয়নকালে ড. কামাল হোসেনের গবেষণা সহযোগী হিসেবে কাজ করার পাশাপাশি ১৯৮০ সালে মিশিগান বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে আন্তর্জাতিক অর্থনীতি বিষয়ক গবেষণামূলক কাজ প্রকাশ করেন তিনি। এ ছাড়া ‘বাংলাদেশ ইনস্টিটিউট অব ল অ্যান্ড ইন্টারন্যাশনাল অ্যাফেয়ার্স’ (বিলিয়া)-র পরিচালক ও মানবাধিকার প্রকল্পের সমন্বয়কারী হিসেবে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করেন।
• শারীরিক অসুস্থতা ও শেষ দিনগুলো: ২০১৯ সালে মারাত্মক স্ট্রোক করার পর থেকেই শারীরিক অসুস্থতার সঙ্গে লড়াই করছিলেন তিনি। অসুস্থ শরীরে হুইলচেয়ারে চেপেও কারাবন্দি স্ত্রীর সঙ্গে দেখা করতে আদালত প্রাঙ্গণে যেতেন—সে দৃশ্য অনেকের স্মৃতিতেই আজ উজ্জ্বল।
• সন্তানের ব্যাকুলতা ও প্যারোলে মুক্তির চেষ্টা: বাবার শেষ বিদায়ে মাকে উপস্থিত রাখার উদ্দেশ্যে প্যারোলে মুক্তির আইনি প্রক্রিয়া নিয়ে একাই লড়ে যাচ্ছেন সন্তান। শোক উদযাপনের নুন্যতম সময়টুকুও আজ যেন পাওয়ার সুযোগ নেই।
রাজনৈতিক পরিচয় ও বিভেদের ঊর্ধ্বে উঠে একজন মানুষের শেষ বিদায়ে যে সম্মান ও মানবিকতা প্রদর্শন করা উচিত, তা আজ বড়ই বিরল। শোকসন্তপ্ত পরিবারকে আল্লাহ এই অপূরণীয় ক্ষতি ও কঠিন সময় সহ্য করার ধৈর্য দান করুন। অপরাধ তিনি দীপু মনির স্বামী, ছিলেন শেখ হাসিনার মামলার আইনজীবী।

On one side lies the eternal departure of a lifelong partner, and on the other, an imprisoned life within the dark walls of a cell—a tragic chapter has come to an end amidst the harsh reality of politics. There were no final words, nor a last sight. Senior Supreme Court Advocate Barrister Toufique Nawaz has departed for the hereafter (Innalillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un). He breathed his last on Tuesday night while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital.
Today, their child stands before a deeply agonizing and heartbreaking situation—on one side lies the father's lifeless body at the hospital, and on the other is a desperate plea to let the imprisoned mother catch one last glimpse of him before the final farewell. This heart-wrenching grief and lonely struggle of a bereaved child would move any conscientious human being.
• A Brilliant Career in Law and Intellect: Barrister Toufique Nawaz was a renowned, internationally acclaimed lawyer and researcher. While studying at Wadham College, Oxford, he worked as a research associate under Dr. Kamal Hossain, and in 1980, he published research on international economics through the University of Michigan. Furthermore, he played key roles as the Director of the Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs (BILIA) and as the coordinator for its human rights project.
• Physical Illness and Final Days: Ever since suffering a severe stroke in 2019, he was fighting ongoing health complications. Despite his frail condition, he used to visit the court premises in a wheelchair to meet his incarcerated wife—a poignant image that remains vivid in many minds.
• A Child's Desperation and Efforts for Parole: In an effort to ensure the mother's presence at the father's final rites, the child is fighting a solitary legal battle to secure her release on parole. Today, there seems to be no time left even to mourn properly.
Rising above political identity and divisions, the respect and humanity that ought to be shown at a person's final farewell are exceedingly rare today. His crime was simply being the husband of Dipu Moni and serving as a defense lawyer in Sheikh Hasina's cases. May Allah grant the bereaved family the fortitude to endure this irreparable loss and difficult time.
