২০২৪ সালে বাংলাদেশে সরকারবিরোধী আন্দোলনের মুখে ভারতে আশ্রয় নেওয়া সাবেক প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা ২১ আগস্টের ‘জিজি প্রেস’-কে দেওয়া একটি লিখিত সাক্ষাৎকারের জবাব দিয়েছেন।
আগামী ডিসেম্বরে দেশে ফেরার বিষয়ে পূর্বে দেওয়া বার্তার বিষয়ে জোর দিয়ে তিনি বলেন, ‘বাংলাদেশের মানুষের প্রতি দায়বদ্ধতা’ থেকেই তিনি ‘নিজ সিদ্ধান্তে’ এই পদক্ষেপ নিচ্ছেন। তিনি আরও স্পষ্ট করেন যে, তাঁর এই প্রত্যাবর্তন কেন্দ্র করে দুই দেশের দ্বিপক্ষীয় সম্পর্কে ‘কোনো ধরনের উত্তেজনা তৈরি করার ইচ্ছা তাঁর ছিল না’।
ভারতে থাকা অবস্থায় প্রত্যাবর্তনের বিষয়ে ভারতীয় কর্তৃপক্ষের সঙ্গে কোনো আলোচনা হয়েছে কিনা জানতে চাওয়া হলে তিনি বলেন, ‘সব ধরনের যোগাযোগ তো আর প্রকাশ্যে আনার প্রয়োজন নেই’—এর মাধ্যমে তিনি ভারতীয় প্রশাসনের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগের বিষয়টি সরাসরি অস্বীকার করা থেকে বিরত থাকেন।
চলতি মাসের ৫ তারিখ ভারতে আশ্রয় নেওয়ার দুই বছর পূর্ণ হওয়া উপলক্ষে শেখ হাসিনা নতুন দিল্লিতে আয়োজিত একটি ভার্চ্যুয়াল সংবাদ সম্মেলনে অংশ নেন। এই সংবাদ সম্মেলনটি করতে দেওয়ার কারণে ভারত সরকারের ওপর অসন্তোষ ও ক্ষোভ প্রকাশ করেছে বাংলাদেশের পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়। পাশাপাশি, একটি হত্যাকাণ্ডের মামলায় মৃত্যুদণ্ডে দণ্ডিত হওয়ায় তাঁকে ফেরত পাঠানোর (প্রত্যর্পণ) দাবি জানিয়েছে ঢাকা, যা বর্তমানে দুই দেশের কূটনৈতিক সম্পর্কে টানাপোড়েন তৈরি করেছে।

১৯৭১ সালের ১৬ ডিসেম্বর পাকিস্তানের বিরুদ্ধে বাংলাদেশের চূড়ান্ত বিজয়ের কথা স্মরণ করিয়ে দিয়ে তিনি জানান, সেই ঐতিহাসিক পটভূমির কারণেই তিনি ‘ডিসেম্বর’ মাসকে বেছে নিয়েছেন। দেশে ফিরলে পরিণাম যা-ই হোক না কেন, তিনি ‘তাতে বিন্দুমাত্র ভীত নন’ বলে উল্লেখ করেন। পরিশেষে, বাংলাদেশের অন্যতম প্রধান উন্নয়ন সহযোগী দেশ হিসেবে জাপানকে এক ‘প্রকৃত বন্ধু’ হিসেবে আখ্যায়িত করেন এবং তাদের প্রতি আন্তরিক ধন্যবাদ ও কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করেন।

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who took refuge in India in 2024 amidst intense anti-government protests in Bangladesh, responded to a written interview with 'Jiji Press' by August 21. Emphasizing her previously announced plan to return home in December, she stated that she is taking this step under "her own decision" out of a "responsibility to the people of Bangladesh." She also clarified that she had "no intention of creating tension" in bilateral relations between the two countries regarding her return.
When asked whether any discussions had taken place with Indian authorities regarding her return while staying in India, she said, "Not all communication needs to be made public"—thereby refraining from directly denying communication with the Indian administration.
On the 5th of this month, marking two years since she took refuge in India, Sheikh Hasina attended a virtual press conference held in New Delhi. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh expressed dissatisfaction and outrage at the Indian government for allowing this press conference to take place. Furthermore, Dhaka has demanded her extradition, as she has been sentenced to death in a homicide case, which currently strains diplomatic relations between the two countries.
In the interview, Sheikh Hasina sharply criticized the current interim government of Bangladesh, claiming they "tried to silence my voice at any cost." As an example, she added, "Even my mobile phone SIM card has been deactivated."
She further asserted with conviction, "I am the elected leader of the people of Bangladesh. Speaking about their suffering, rights, security, democracy, and the rule of law is not only my right—it is my moral duty."
Reminding of the ultimate victory of Bangladesh against Pakistan on December 16, 1971, she shared that she chose the month of "December" due to that historical backdrop. She mentioned that no matter what consequences await her upon returning to the country, she is "not the least bit afraid." Finally, she characterized Japan, one of Bangladesh's major development partners, as a "true friend" and expressed her sincere thanks and gratitude to them.
