1. The Shift of Power and the Dark Conspiracy Web of Bangabhaban
Following the brutal assassination of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with his family on August 15, 1975, the political sky of Bangladesh was draped in the deep darkness of a new moon. In continuation of that power grab and palace intrigue, another demonic chapter unfolded just two and a half months later. November 3, 1975—this date is not merely a marker in time; it is a blood-red stigma branded upon the forehead of the Bengali nation. Concocted within the secure chambers of Bangabhaban under the direct patronage of the then-President Khondakar Mustaque Ahmed, this was one of the most heinous massacres in history. At the behest of the masterminds behind the scenes, an armed squad of four military officers marched toward the Dhaka Central Jail, where four guiding stars of Bangladesh’s struggle for independence were imprisoned.
2. The Brutal Incursion of Assassins into Dhaka Central Jail and the Final Moments of Ablution
The night was deep. The heavy iron gates of Dhaka Central Jail stood ominously silent, as if anticipating an ill-fated omen. Immense pressure was exerted from Bangabhaban upon IG Prisons ATM Nuruzzaman and DIG Prisons Kazi Abdul Awal to pave the way for the killers. One by one, the four national leaders—Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, Captain M. Mansur Ali, and A. H. M. Kamaruzzaman—were confined to Cell Number 1.
When the assassin Captain Moslem and his accomplices entered the cell armed with weapons, the air was thick with the scent of death. Reminiscences of Jailor Aminur Rahman and Subedar Abdul Wahed Mridha reveal a heart-wrenching picture of those moments. Even in the face of imminent death, they maintained their statesmanlike composure. Tajuddin Ahmad calmly inquired about the reason for the sounding of the alarm bell. Then, all four leaders performed their ablutions together in the bathroom, leaving the Holy Quran open on a table. Even in that sacred final moment of bowing their heads before Almighty Allah before death, their hands did not tremble in the least.
3. The Four Pillars of Bengal Roved by Brash Fire and Bayonet Brutality
Scarcely had the four leaders finished their ablutions and seated themselves on Syed Nazrul Islam’s cot when the assassins' Chinese rifles and sten guns erupted in an unceasing barrage of gunfire. Within moments, nearly sixty rounds of bullets riddled the walls of Cell Number 1 and pierced the Holy Quran resting on the table. Collapsing onto the floor fell Bangladesh's first provisional president Syed Nazrul Islam, Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmad, cabinet minister Captain M. Mansur Ali, and A. H. M. Kamaruzzaman.
The savagery did not end there. At 5:25 AM, another hit squad led by Naik A. Ali entered the cell once again from Bangabhaban, harboring the slightest doubt that someone might still be alive. They thrust bayonets repeatedly into the bodies of the near-lifeless leaders to ensure their deaths. As the call to the Fajr prayer floated from the minaret of the Chawkbazar Grand Mosque, the prison floor was drenched in the blood of Bengal's finest sons.
4. The Long Culture of Impunity and the Plea for Justice
Successive governments following 1975 systematically suppressed the investigation and judicial process of this jail killing case for years. The sensational report of the then-prison authorities remained shrouded in darkness for 21 years. Traversing lengthy legal battles, witness testimonies, and trial court verdicts, when the case finally reached the Appellate Division, the grim truths of history were unveiled before the nation by the chief state counsel. Although the High Court acquitted most of the accused, this culture of impunity continues to move the entire nation to tears to this day. History bears witness that these four leaders were not merely individuals—they were the indomitable driving force of the Bengali self-determination movement and the Great Liberation War. On this soil stained with their blood, today there remains only one prayer: that by piercing through all webs of conspiracy, true justice may finally be established.
