The memories of independence, self-identity, sacrifice, and the achievement of an independent state and a distinct map are deeply rooted in the hearts of a vast majority of the people of Bangladesh. Therefore, seeing someone carry the national flag or hearing words like "Bangabandhu," "Liberation War," and "Joy Bangla" often overwhelms many with emotion. Sometimes, that emotion is so powerful that people assume the individual is a close friend or an ally without ever checking their past activities, current behavior, or political motives.
The trap of deception is created right here. Someone might utter the name of Bangabandhu, step forward to carry the national flag, speak of the Liberation War, or even highlight religious values—yet their personal honesty, political motives, and actions may have no alignment with these symbols. A person's external identity or the symbols they use never guarantee their character or honesty. Just as our society has instances of individuals engaging in immoral acts while hiding behind religious attire and identity, it is equally possible to manipulate the emotions surrounding the Liberation War, Bangabandhu, or the national flag to deceive people.
A linear belief often works in the minds of many Bangabandhu-lovers: "Whoever loves Bangabandhu must undoubtedly be on the side of independence." Similarly, if someone wraps the red and green national flag around their shoulders or head and takes to the streets, they are presumed to be a supporter of an independent Bangladesh and an opponent of the pro-Pakistani forces of 1971. However, in the equations of real politics, this assumption is not always accurate.
In the political movement of 2024 and the subsequent chain of events, the people of Bangladesh faced a significant experience regarding this. A person can simultaneously hold deep respect for Bangabandhu’s historical role, the Liberation War, and Bangladesh; while at the same time fiercely opposing the ruling regime’s corruption, abuse of power, flawed policies, unjust behavior, or political mismanagement. Therefore, blindly supporting all activities of a political party is not the same as showing respect for Bangabandhu and the Liberation War. Nor is it safe to reach a final conclusion about someone's political character merely by hearing their use of external symbols or verbal slogans.
On the other hand, after August 5, 2024, it was observed that many of those who previously used symbols like Bangabandhu, the national flag, or the Liberation War underwent a dramatic shift in their positions. In various instances, extreme disrespect toward Bangabandhu, dishonor to the national flag, and utterly derogatory behavior toward the Liberation War and brave freedom fighters became public. These incidents bring a fundamental question to the fore—were the emotions of Bangabandhu, the national flag, the Liberation War, and patriotism being used merely as tools to serve political agendas?
This is where our civic vigilance is required. Instead of judging someone by scripted slogans, clothes worn, flags held in hand, or political symbols used, it is essential to comprehensively evaluate their words, actions, past role, and present stance. Symbols can stimulate human emotions, but a symbol by itself cannot serve as a certificate of an individual's honesty or patriotism.
Some intellectuals and political analysts frequently remind us that Bangabandhu’s historical contribution should not be conflated with the specific decisions of any political party. Maintaining this distinction in principle is crucial: evaluating Bangabandhu's historical role is one thing, while evaluating the policies and actions of a specific government at a given time is an entirely different matter.
However, the experience of the political shift in 2024 has made another reality clear to us. In the political history of Bangladesh, neither Bangabandhu, the Liberation War, the national flag, the past of political parties, nor the country's overall developmental experience are detached from one another. Yet, lumping them all together indiscriminately is also not reasonable; every historical subject must be judged within its own historical context and momentum.
Bangabandhu, the Liberation War, the national flag, and "Joy Bangla"—these elements are inextricably linked with the history of Bangladesh and the emotions of its people. Therefore, these symbols easily exert a profound influence on people's beliefs and feelings. However, so that those feelings do not become an opportunity or a tool for political deception, we must keep our critical intellect and wisdom active alongside our emotions.
Just because someone utters Bangabandhu's name does not mean they are honest; nor does carrying the national flag guarantee that they are the true custodians of the national spirit. Likewise, the conclusion that anyone who opposes a government's flawed policies or injustices is automatically anti-state or anti-liberation is equally unacceptable. In a healthy and democratic society, the most reliable benchmark for evaluating an individual's identity and political stance should be their words, actions, values, past history, and accountability to the people—not merely an emotional symbol.
