In the Pages of History The greatness of certain individuals cannot be measured by the span of their lives. Where the magnitude of one's deeds touches the sky, even a short-lived life takes the shape of an epic. A stormy life of merely twenty-six springs; yet within it, an eternal dreamer etched his name onto the canvas of eternity—Sheikh Kamal. Despite being the eldest son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, his extremely simple demeanor, humble radiance, and benevolent heart touched the common people. He never used his father's vast stature as a shield of pride; rather, through his own wisdom, creativity, and the power of indomitable youth, he became the architect of modernity in independent Bangladesh.
Born on August 5, 1949, in the serene village of Tungipara, Gopalganj, he was a rare blend of rebellion and creation right from his childhood. The very first impression of his life brought separation—his father was repeatedly imprisoned while weaving the dream of independence. The heartbreaking plea of the innocent child Kamal, "Hachu Apa, can I call your Abba 'Abba' for a little bit?"—stands as perhaps the most poignant strain of a historical narrative. That restless longing of a fatherless childhood perhaps matured him ahead of time and taught him the glory of self-sacrifice.
From the sitar playing room of Chhayanaut to the theater stage or basketball court of Dhaka University—he never paused anywhere. As the founder of Dhaka Theatre and the driving force behind 'Spondon Shilpi Gosthi', he sowed the unique seeds of cultural practice among the youth of a war-torn country right after independence. The young man whose rebellious voice thundered against Ayub Khan's ban on Rabindra Sangeet was the very same youth who revolutionized stage theater after independence and earned acclaim even in Kolkata.
However, what Sheikh Kamal left behind in the sports arena is no ordinary story—it is an unforgettable epic. As a fast bowler for Dhaka's Shaheen School or as the visionary founder of Abahani Krira Chakra, he brought a revolutionary tempest. In 1973, when even national teams in the subcontinent had no foreign coach, he flew in Bill Hart for Abahani, reshaping the modern blueprint of football. The roar of the red-and-green on the world stage today, from the ICC Champions Trophy to the radiance in global cricket—its first stepping stone was crafted single-handedly by this visionary craftsman of modernity.
Yet, what a bizarre tragedy of history! The hero who directly participated in the Liberation War, earned a commission in the First War Course, and served as the ADC to General Osmani, was subjected to the cruel stigma of propaganda by toxic conspirators after independence. The false and fabricated stories concocted to tarnish his reputation, ranging from bank robberies to kidnappings, have all blown away like dust on the touchstone of time and history. Even Peter Hazelhurst, a journalist for London's Daily Telegraph, realized that truth at the time—
The henna color on the hands of athletics 'Golden Girl' Sultana Khuku was still fresh, barely a month into their marriage—when the assassins' bullets silenced that brilliant youth on the dark night of August 15, 1975.
Although the assassins' bullets brought an end to Sheikh Kamal's physical existence, it was impossible to extinguish the flame of light he had ignited. In the sitar of Chhayanaut, on the green grass of Abahani, in the chiaroscuro of the theater, and in every positive stride of creative youth, Sheikh Kamal remains an imperishable giant tree. He does not come often, but the starlit brilliance he spread during his brief presence burns ever brighter and timelessly across independent Bangladesh through the passage of time.
