Brick walls can perhaps be wrapped in a fresh coat of paint, and the black marks left by fire can be erased with whitewash. But can the wounds of a land that absorbed the blood of grief and horror—or an atmosphere that echoed with the screams of helpless people—heal so easily?
Two years have passed. The tragedy of that terrifying August 4th at Enayetpur Police Station in Sirajganj remains unblemished, vivid, and deeply frightening in people's minds. On one cursed afternoon, 15 police officers lost their lives in a brutal attack at Enayetpur Police Station. The station building was reduced to ashes in the fire of that violence, and a large quantity of lethal weapons was looted.
Even today, after all this time, standing on the freshly painted station premises and looking at the piled-up skeletons of burnt vehicles sends a shiver down the spine. An even greater concern is that a significant portion of the deadly firearms looted that day remains missing, scattered in some unknown cavern of darkness.
Faced with a fierce attack and no hope for survival, the police officers ran frantically, pleading for their lives. Some took shelter on the roof, while others hid inside the rooftop water tank. In the evening, after the army made an announcement over the loudspeaker, 9 to 10 police officers emerged from the rooftop water tank in a half-dead state.
In Search of a Sliver of Shelter: Courtyards, Ponds, and Lifeless Bodies
Crossing the collapsed boundary wall at the back of the station, several police officers took refuge in the homes of nearby ordinary weaver laborers to save their lives. The courtyard of Bablu Tanti, a man in his sixties, turned into a tragic death zone that day.
With tearful eyes, Bablu Tanti recalls, "10 to 12 police officers hid in the bathroom of my house. But they were dragged out from there and beaten to death right in the courtyard. The body of the then-Officer-in-Charge was thrown into a nearby pond. All around were blood and stripped bodies..."
Having witnessed such human cruelty, Bablu Tanti's wife, Manjuara Khatun, is mentally traumatized today. The horror of that event haunts her to the extent that for nearly six months, she could not return to her homestead during the day. Fear and panic remain her daily companions, requiring her to consult a doctor regularly.
Yet, even amid this darkness, humanity did not completely vanish. When Bablu Tanti and his family saw that three or four injured police officers were still somehow breathing, they conquered their fear and stepped forward. Covering their bodies with their own clothes, they safely escorted them to a secure location through secret paths.
A Coat of Paint Over Wounds, Yet the Silent Fear of Missing Weapons Remains
After remaining abandoned for a while, Enayetpur Police Station resumed normal operations in its old building following extensive renovation work. The black soot of the fire has been erased under a fresh coat of paint. However, the skeletal remains of motorcycles and pickups piled in a corner serve as silent witnesses to that brutality as case evidence.
Investigating Officer and Enayetpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Farid Uddin stated that five pistols, Chinese rifles, shotguns, gas guns, and a vast quantity of ammunition and gas shells were looted from the station during the rampage. Despite a lengthy investigation, one looted rifle, four pistols, and a shotgun have yet to be recovered.
On the same day, 25 firearms were also looted from the attacked Hatikumrul Highway Police Station, out of which 8 weapons are still unrecovered, confirmed Investigating Officer Monojit Kumar Nandi. Conscious citizens are deeply alarmed over where these missing weapons are and into whose hands they have fallen.
The walls of the Enayetpur Police Station building may have found new life—duty officers sit there, and public services are provided. But can those bloodstains ever be erased from the chest of Sirajganj's soil? Or are the local residents still unable to breathe a sigh of relief under the silent threat of the unrecovered weapons? The search for answers continues today.
