Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib: The Immortal Guiding Star of the Bengalis
In the pages of history, some names shine in their own glory, while others remain behind the scenes to shape history and its great heroes. Bangamata Begum Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib was one such glorious woman. She was not only the wife of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman; she was the primary political shadow, the driving force, and the silent inspiration of his political life.
Begum Mujib took all the responsibilities of the family upon her own shoulders. She never demanded anything extra from her husband—no saree, no jewelry, no luxurious life. After Bangabandhu became a minister in '54, they moved into a government residence on Abdul Gani Road. However, when he decided to resign from the cabinet to reorganize the party, any other ordinary woman might have objected out of fear of losing that luxury and security. But Begum Mujib wholeheartedly supported him and unhesitatingly returned to a modest two-room house.
Bangabandhu spent the lion's share of his life in prison. During those difficult times, she steered the family through immense hardships with utmost patience. From sheltering her young children, finding a house, fighting legal battles, to helping party workers—she managed everything silently. In times of scarcity, she would console her children by cooking khichuri for them, never letting the word 'no' cross her lips. She even willingly sold her jewelry and the household refrigerator to help party workers and ailing leaders with a smile on her face.
Her political foresight was unparalleled. During the 1966 six-point movement, when many leaders were confused and leaning towards an 8-point demand, Begum Mujib stood firm and clearly declared, "The 6-point demand is the charter of emancipation for the people of Bengal." During the Agartala Conspiracy Case, when Ayub Khan tried to release Bangabandhu on parole to attend a round-table conference, Begum Mujib sent a message from captivity—no compromise without unconditional release; no parole. That unwavering decision of hers sowed the seeds of an independent Bangladesh that day. Her immortal advice to Bangabandhu right before his historic speech on March 7, 1971—"Say whatever comes to your mind"—remains one of the greatest examples of political foresight in the world today.
However, the epic life of this supreme guardian of the independence struggle ended in ultimate tragedy. The woman who was a symbol of courage—whether it was roaring "Drop your weapons" at an armed soldier while in captivity in 1971, or rehabilitating violated women with utmost affection after independence—demonstrated an incomparable sacrifice on the dark night of August 15, 1975.
When the assassins brutally murdered her beloved 'Mujib,' Begum Mujib did not beg for her life or try to flee. Instead, she stood tall in front of the killers and said, "Since you have killed him, kill me too."
This glorious woman, who remained by his side like a shadow her entire life, did not leave her beloved companion alone even in the face of death. In a blood-stained royal departure, she embraced the hit of the same bullet. After dedicating her life to silently building Bangladesh, she now sleeps beside Bangabandhu, written in blood, forever remaining a symbol of inseparable love. The contributions and sacrifices of the glorious Bangamata will remain forever untarnished in the hearts of the Bengali nation. Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, the immortal guiding star of the Bengalis, has shown us the way and will continue to show us the way – Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.
