ইতিহাসের পাতায় কিছু নাম কেবল পরিচয়ের পরিধিতে সীমাবদ্ধ থাকে না; তারা হয়ে ওঠেন ত্যাগ, ভালোবাসা ও নীরব অনুপ্রেরণার একেকটি জীবন্ত প্রতীক। তেমনই এক অনন্য ব্যক্তিত্ব জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ও বঙ্গমাতা শেখ ফজিলাতুন নেছা মুজিবের কনিষ্ঠ কন্যা, আমাদের সবার প্রিয় 'ছোট আপা' শেখ রেহানা।
ঝঞ্জাক্ষুব্ধ শৈশব ও রক্তে ভেজা স্মৃতির ক্ষত
১৯৫৫ সালের ১৩ সেপ্টেম্বর গোপালগঞ্জের টুঙ্গিপাড়ায় জন্ম নেওয়া এই চঞ্চল কন্যাটির শৈশব আর দশটি সাধারণ শিশুর মতো ছিল না। শিশুমন যখন কেবল আনন্দ আর রঙিন স্বপ্নে বিভোর হতে শেখে, তখন থেকেই তিনি দেখেছেন পিতার কারাবাস। শৈশবে বাবাকে কাছে পাওয়াটাই ছিল তাদের সবচেয়ে বড় উৎসব—জেলখানার বাইরে বাবার উপস্থিতিই এনে দিত "ডাবল ঈদ"-এর আনন্দ।
কিন্তু কৈশোরের শেষপ্রান্তে এসে ১৯৭৫ সালের ১৫ আগস্টের সেই কালোরাতে থমকে যায় তাঁর পুরো পৃথিবী। ঘাতকের নির্মম বুলেটে পিষ্ট হয় পুরো পরিবার। প্রবাসে থাকার কারণে বড় বোন শেখ হাসিনার সঙ্গে প্রাণরক্ষা পেলেও, সেই বেঁচে থাকা যেন ছিল মৃত্যুর চেয়েও বেশি যন্ত্রণাদায়ক। রক্তে ভেজা স্বদেশের মাটিতে ফেরার পথ বন্ধ, মাথায় স্বজন হারানোর পাহাড়সম শোক—শুরু হলো এক দীর্ঘ অচেনা নিঃসঙ্গতা ও ফেরারি জীবনের যাতনা।
দুই বোনের অশ্রুসিক্ত বন্ধন ও নেপথ্যের শক্তি
পিতার আদর্শ যার ধমনীতে, আঘাত তাকে দমিয়ে রাখতে পারে না। ঘোর অমানিশার মাঝেও ছোট বোন শেখ রেহানা হয়ে উঠলেন বড় বোন শেখ হাসিনার একমাত্র আশ্রয়, হৃদয়ের শক্তি। একদিকে স্বজন হারানোর ক্ষত, অন্যদিকে অভাব-অনটন আর জীবনহানির শঙ্কা—সবকিছু অতিক্রম করে দুই বোনের এই বন্ধন পরিণত হলো এক অমলিন যুগলবন্দিতে।
দেশ ও মানুষের অধিকার ফিরিয়ে দেওয়ার লড়াইয়ে বড় বোন শেখ হাসিনা যখন রাজপথে সামনে থেকে নেতৃত্ব দিতে লাগলেন, তখন ঘরের সমস্ত দায়িত্ব নীরব মমতায় নিজের কাঁধে তুলে নেন শেখ রেহানা। বড় বোনের সন্তান জয় ও পুতুলকে নিজের সন্তানদের সাথেই পরম স্নেহে আগলে রেখে মানুষ করেছেন।
নিরবচ্ছিন্ন প্রতিবাদ ও আন্তর্জাতিক মঞ্চে কণ্ঠস্বর
প্রচারপ্রদীপের আড়ালে থাকলেও অবিচারের বিরুদ্ধে তাঁর কণ্ঠ কখনো থেমে থাকেনি। ১৯৭৭ সালে বিলেতের সাউদাম্পটন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে উচ্চ শিক্ষারত ড. শফিক আহমেদ সিদ্দিকের সাথে বিবাহবন্ধনে আবদ্ধ হওয়ার পর প্রবাসেই গড়ে তোলেন প্রতিবাদের প্রাচীর। ১৯৭৯ সালে স্টকহোমে সর্বইউরোপীয় বাকশাল সম্মেলনে বড় বোনের প্রতিনিধি হয়ে আন্তর্জাতিক পরিমণ্ডলে প্রথম বঙ্গবন্ধু হত্যার বিচারের দাবি তোলেন তিনি। পরবর্তীতে ইউরোপীয় বঙ্গবন্ধু পরিষদ ও আন্তর্জাতিক তদন্ত কমিশন গঠনে নেপথ্যে থেকে ঐতিহাসিক ভূমিকা পালন করেন।
সংকটে অনন্য কান্ডারি ও বিনম্র জীবনের রূপকার
রাজনীতি ও ক্ষমতার খুব কাছে থেকেও তিনি চিরকাল রয়ে গেছেন নির্মোহ ও সাধারণ মানুষের মতো। কখনো রাজনীতির সামনের সারিতে আসার মোহ তাঁকে স্পর্শ করেনি। তবে ওয়ান-ইলেভেনের কঠিন সময়ে যখন শেখ হাসিনাকে কারান্তরীণ করা হয়, তখন দলের ঐক্য ধরে রাখতে এবং আন্তর্জাতিক অঙ্গনে শেখ হাসিনার মুক্তির বার্তা পৌঁছে দিতে তিনি সাহসিকতার পরিচয় দেন। ২০০৪ সালের ২১ আগস্টের ভয়াল গ্রেনেড হামলার পর থেকে শুরু করে প্রতিটি রাজনৈতিক সংকটে তিনি ছায়ার মতো থেকেছেন বড় বোনের প্রাণশক্তি হয়ে।
সততার আলোকচ্ছটা ও স্নেহের নীড়
ব্যক্তিজীবনে তিনি এক রত্নগর্ভা মা। ছেলে রাদওয়ান মুজিব সিদ্দিক, বড় মেয়ে টিউলিপ সিদ্দিক এবং ছোট মেয়ে আজমিনা সিদ্দিক রূপন্তীকে দিয়েছেন মেধা, নীতি ও সততার শিক্ষা। শুধু পারিবারিক জীবনেই নয়, দেশের জন্যও তাঁর ত্যাগ অপরিসীম। ধানমন্ডির ঐতিহাসিক ৩২ নম্বরের বাড়িটিকে জাদুঘর করার পাশাপাশি নিজের নামে পাওয়া বাড়িটিও তিনি দান করে দিয়েছেন দেশের কল্যাণে।
মিয়ানমার থেকে বিতাড়িত রোহিঙ্গাদের আশ্রয় দেওয়ার পেছনেও ছিল তাঁর গভীর মানবিক আকুতি। আজ তিনি কেবল বঙ্গবন্ধুর কন্যা বা প্রধানমন্ত্রীর ছোট বোন নন—তিনি হাজারো বাঙালির ভালোবাসার 'ছোট আপা', যার আত্মত্যাগ ও নীরব উপস্থিতি আমাদের দেখায় কীভাবে নীরব থেকেও ইতিহাস গড়ে তোলা যায়।
বঙ্গবন্ধুর এই কনিষ্ঠ কন্যার ত্যাগ ও ভালোবাসার যুগলবন্দি যুগ যুগ ধরে বেঁচে থাকুক এ দেশের মানুষের হৃদয়ে।

One such unique personality is the youngest daughter of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib—our beloved 'Chhotu Apa', Sheikh Rehana.
A Turbulent Childhood and the Wounds of Bloody Memories
Born on September 13, 1955, in Tungipara, Gopalganj, this vibrant girl did not have a childhood like other regular children. When a child's mind usually dreams of joy and colorful aspirations, she witnessed her father's frequent imprisonment. Having her father nearby was the biggest celebration of her childhood—his presence outside prison brought the joy of a "Double Eid."
However, at the edge of her adolescence, her entire world came to a sudden standstill on the dark night of August 15, 1975. Her whole family was brutally slain by assassins' bullets. Although she survived alongside her elder sister Sheikh Hasina as they were abroad, that survival felt more agonizing than death itself. With the doors to their blood-stained homeland closed and a mountain of grief on their shoulders, a long journey of unfamiliar loneliness and exile began.
The Tearful Bond of Two Sisters and a Pillar of Strength
When the ideals of the Father of the Nation flow through one's veins, hardship cannot subdue them. Amidst the darkest hour, the younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, became the sole refuge and emotional strength for her elder sister, Sheikh Hasina. Overcoming the deep wounds of losing their family, financial hardship, and constant fears for their lives, the bond between the two sisters transformed into an eternal solidarity.
As elder sister Sheikh Hasina took to the streets to lead the struggle for the nation and its people's rights, Sheikh Rehana quietly took full responsibility for the family on her shoulders. She raised her sister's children, Joy and Putul, with the same deep affection as her own.
Unwavering Protest and a Voice on the International Stage
Though she stayed out of the spotlight, her voice against injustice was never silenced. After tying the knot in 1977 with Dr. Shafiq Ahmed Siddique, who was pursuing higher education at Southampton University in the UK, she built a wall of protest abroad. In 1979, representing her elder sister at the All-European BAKSAL Conference in Stockholm, she raised the demand for justice for Bangabandhu's assassination on an international platform for the first time. Later, she played a historic behind-the-scenes role in forming the All-European Bangabandhu Council and the International Commission of Inquiry.
An Extraordinary Navigator in Times of Crisis and an Exemplar of Humility
Despite remaining so close to politics and power, she has always stayed selfless and lived like an ordinary person. The lure of frontline politics never appealed to her. Yet, during the difficult period of 1/11 when Sheikh Hasina was imprisoned, Sheikh Rehana demonstrated immense courage to maintain party unity and convey the message for Sheikh Hasina's release to the international community. From the horrific August 21, 2004 grenade attack onwards, she remained like a steadfast shadow, serving as her elder sister's vital energy through every political crisis.
An Effulgence of Honesty and a Haven of Affection
In her personal life, she is a proud and successful mother. She has instilled wisdom, values, and integrity in her son Radwan Mujib Siddiq, elder daughter Tulip Siddiq, and younger daughter Azmina Siddiq Rupanti. Beyond her family life, her sacrifices for the country are immense. Alongside dedicating the historical House No. 32 in Dhanmondi to become a museum, she also donated the house allotted in her name for the welfare of the country.
Her deep humanitarian concern was also instrumental behind providing shelter to the displaced Rohingya population from Myanmar. Today, she is not merely Bangabandhu's daughter or the Prime Minister's younger sister—she is the cherished 'Chhotu Apa' to millions of Bengalis, whose self-sacrifice and quiet presence demonstrate how history can be made even from behind the scenes.
May the enduring legacy of sacrifice and love embodied by Bangabandhu's youngest daughter live on in the hearts of the people of this country for generations to come.
