Lord Sri Krishna descended upon the earth on the Ashtami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the Bengali month of Bhadra. According to this calendar, Friday, September 4, 2026, was the birthday of Lord Sri Krishna. The Ashtami Tithi began at 2:25 AM on September 4 and ended at 12:13 AM on September 5. On this day, devotees observe a day-long fast and complete the birthday celebrations and ritual bathing (Abhisheka) of Krishna at midnight (Nishitha kaal) through special prayers.
For new readers, it is worth noting that according to the Hindu calendar or Vedic timekeeping, a Tithi is a specific lunar phase determined by the relative positions of the Sun and the Moon. The 15-day period from the new moon to the next full moon is called Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight), while the 15 days following the full moon are called Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight). Every fortnight contains one Ashtami Tithi, and whether a lunar month consists of 29 or 30 days, the total number of Tithis is always 30.
Sri Krishna is a principal deity in Hinduism, worshiped as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu and by many as the Supreme Being Himself. His biological parents were Vasudeva and Devaki, while his foster parents were Nanda and Yashoda. He was born in a prison in Mathura. Balarama and Subhadra are his siblings.
Misunderstandings Regarding Rashlila and Vastraharan
Sri Krishna's Rashlila and Vastraharan are two important and deeply significant chapters in Hindu puranas. In Bangladesh, there are various misunderstandings regarding these two events—some people, knowingly or unknowingly, present them as worldly love affairs or ordinary events in an attempt to belittle the faith of Krishna devotees. This article is an effort to dispel those misunderstandings.
Rashlila is a celebration of divine and spiritual love between Sri Krishna and the Gopis of Vrindavan—it is not worldly or physical love. On an autumn full moon night, when Sri Krishna plays his flute, the Gopis are enchanted by the melody and run to the banks of the Yamuna, forgetting their domestic lives. To ensure that no pride arises in anyone's heart and that everyone feels Krishna's presence by their side, Sri Krishna miraculously assumes multiple forms and dances in a circle with each Gopi.
In Sanatana Dharma, Rashlila is viewed as the symbol of the union between the individual soul (Jivatma) and the Supreme Soul (Paramatma). There is no place for lust or worldly desires here; it is an expression of pure, unselfish devotion and love. Sri Krishna manifested Himself in many forms so that every Gopi felt Krishna was dancing exclusively with her—the spiritual meaning of which is that God resides equally and personally in the heart of every living being.
Although the incident of Vastraharan (stealing of clothes) may seem controversial on the surface, behind it lies a profound spiritual lesson and a message of total surrender. The unmarried Gopis of Vrindavan had been observing the ritual (vrata) of Goddess Katyayani for a month with the desire to have Sri Krishna as their husband. On the final day of the ritual, while they were bathing in the waters of the Yamuna, Sri Krishna took their clothes, climbed a Kadamba tree, and asked them to come out of the water with joined hands to receive their garments.
The primary purpose of this was to eliminate shame, fear, and body-centric delusion or pride from the minds of the devotees. In a spiritual sense, nothing can be hidden from God; before the Supreme Soul, the individual soul must shed all layers of ego, desire, and illusion (Maya) to surrender in complete purity.
Philosophical Similarities with Sufism
While Rashlila and Vastraharan may externally appear to be mundane events, their underlying philosophy is entirely different. Although there is no direct historical connection with Sufism—the mystical branch of Islam—a noticeable conceptual similarity can be found between the two traditions regarding the soul's longing to unite with the Supreme Soul, or the "philosophy of love." To reach the Supreme Divine, a seeker must renounce all worldly identities and ego, approaching with a pure and uncovered heart—a symbol not of sensuality, but of ultimate purity.
Vaishnava philosophy and Sufism originate from two completely different religious contexts. Sufism developed on the foundations of the Holy Quran, Hadith, and the oneness of God (Tawhid) in Islam. Nevertheless, at deeper levels of spiritual practice, some intriguing parallels appear in their conceptual frameworks and metaphors:
• Ishq-e-Haqiqi or Divine Love: Just as the love between Radha and Krishna in Vaishnava philosophy represents the soul's intense longing for God, unconditional love for the Creator in Sufism is called Ishq-e-Haqiqi (Divine Love). In the poetry of Jalaluddin Rumi or Hafez, God is portrayed as the Mashuq (Beloved) and the seeker as the Asheq (Lover), which is comparable to the essence of Rashlila. Just as the Gopis forget their existence and merge into Krishna's being through dance, Sufi philosophy terms this Fana-fi-Allah—the annihilation of the self (Nafs) or ego in the essence of Allah.
• Vastraharan and Tazkiyat-un-Nafs: Just as Vastraharan speaks of shedding the layers of pride and social shame, Sufism similarly emphasizes purging evil inclinations, worldly greed, and ego, a process known as Tazkiyat-un-Nafs (purification of the self). The practice among Sufis of wearing coarse woolen garments (suf) was also rooted in a mindset of renouncing opulence and social pride—many Sufi saints in Bangladesh still wear jute or burlap clothing to this day.
• The Flute's Melody and Sama: The allegory of the Gopis being entranced by the sound of Sri Krishna's flute is equally popular in Sufi tradition. The spiritual music and dance performed by Rumi and the dervishes of the Mevlevi order—known as Sama—presents a spiritual parallel to the circular dance of Rashlila. In Rumi's Masnavi, the flute is depicted as the cry of the soul yearning after being severed from its original source—the Creator.
Fundamental Differences
Despite these conceptual similarities, significant differences remain in the core beliefs of the two traditions. In Rashlila, God assumes a personal, physical form (Sakar) to perform His divine play (Leela); whereas in Sufism, Allah is recognized as entirely formless (Nirakar), absolute, and the supreme controller of the universe, with seekers striving for His spiritual proximity.
During the medieval period in India, the interplay of ideas between Sufi saints and practitioners of the Bhakti movement in Sanatana Dharma (such as Kabir and Mirabai) gave birth to a vast humanistic and liberal consciousness among the common people—a heritage that remains a beautiful example of interfaith dialogue to this day.
