A complete stalemate has emerged in recent days centered around widespread labor unrest in the readymade garment (RMG) sector, factory closures, and turmoil across the industrial belts in and around Dhaka. However, at a time of crisis driven by unpaid wages and the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, the tendency to shift political blame has intensified instead of prioritizing the fundamental demands of workers. This ill attempt to label the workers' fight for survival as a "political ghost" or a "conspiracy" is rendering the overall social and political reality of the country even more complex.
Battleground in the Industrial Belts: Justified Demands for Wage Hikes and Production Collapse
Over the past few days, key garment industrial areas including Dhaka's Mirpur, Ashulia, Gazipur, and Narayanganj have virtually turned into epicenters of protests and clashes. Crushed by the wage structure last set in 2023 and the current market prices, RMG workers have been forced onto the streets demanding a 140 percent wage hike.
Facing reality, this crisis has taken a severe turn:
• Factory Closures: According to BGMEA data, production has come to a complete halt in nearly 670 member factories, leaving over 1.6 million workers deprived of work.
• Lack of Advance Intelligence/Government Action: Despite forecasts of protests and unrest, no timely or effective measures were taken at the policy-making level.
• Owners' Inability: A section of factory owners states that a sudden wage hike of this magnitude is difficult for them to absorb under the prevailing economic conditions.
However, when this mass demand for a minimum standard of living cannot be handled properly due to administrative inertia, that is precisely when a different kind of politics steps in.
The Culture of Shifting Political Blame: From the Interim Era to the BNP Government
A long-standing and familiar trend in Bangladeshi politics is to brand any social or commercial movement as an opposition "conspiracy." Just as the former Yunus government and its supporters saw the 'ghost of the Awami League' in various 2024 movements—such as the Ansar members' demands for job permanentization and the abolition of the rest system—the current ruling BNP government has walked down the exact same path.
Statements from the Home Minister and the Labor Minister explicitly claim that a "third party" or certain factory owners who benefited under the previous government are instigating the instability in the garment sector. Additionally, allegations are being made that blueprints are being drawn to destabilize the government ahead of December. However, serious questions arise as to how justified it is to cover up real labor discontent and hunger behind the smokescreen of political scaremongering.
Delhi's Activity and 'December Phobia': Politics Surrounding Sheikh Hasina's Return
The primary driver behind the intensifying "December Phobia" within the government appears to be news emanating from Delhi. Sources report that several key meetings were recently held in Delhi under the leadership of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, involving former MPs, lawyers visiting from Europe, and leaders of affiliate organizations.
• Possible Date of Return: Indications suggest Sheikh Hasina may return to Bangladesh within the second or third week of coming December, with strong rumors of an official date announcement.
• Mobilization of Programs: Instructions have reportedly been issued to intensify field-level activities and declare an all-out resistance movement starting from mid-November.
• Government's Stance: The government maintains that if Sheikh Hasina returns to Bangladesh, legal procedures and justice will be ensured, and no extrajudicial mob action will be permitted.
Yet, amid the oscillations of political equations and spectral fears of December, the ultimate blow falls on the main engine of the country's economy—the readymade garment sector.
Conclusion: Can Fear-Mongering Satisfy Hunger?
Following the extreme rise in the cost of living and the recent hike in LPG gas prices, managing a household has become nearly impossible for ordinary workers. The workers' stance is clear: surviving in today's skyrocketing market on their current wages is simply unsustainable.
Politics may carry its own December calculations or party activities, but dismissing industrial turbulence merely as the 'returning ghost of the Awami League' or 'political instigation' will not resolve the root crisis. Managing political opponents may be the government's role, but using that pretext to feed the hunger of workers taking to the streets is impossible. To keep factory wheels turning and rescue the national economy, fear-mongering must cease immediately, and workers' fair dues along with their basic right to survival must be guaranteed.
