In the cold corridors of hospitals, there is now only the sound of relatives stifling their tears and wailing in despair. A dark shadow of uncertainty looms over the faces of people rushing frantically in all directions to save the lives of their loved ones. Somewhere, a mother's lap is emptied by the cruel strike of dengue, while elsewhere, the face of a glowing, innocent child falls still after writhing in agonizing discomfort. Infectious diseases like dengue and measles in the country are no longer mere statistical figures; they have turned into a heartbreaking tragedy for thousands of families.
Thousands of Families Left Destitute in the Death Toll
The terrifying rage of mosquito-borne dengue fever shows no sign of abated fury. Every single day, a beloved child lighting up their parents' world or a family's sole breadwinner is losing their life. In just the last 24 hours, four more precious lives succumbed to the venomous grip of dengue.
These four individuals breathed their last while undergoing treatment in various hospitals across Barishal, Chattogram, Khulna, and Dhaka North City Corporation. Their departure has left behind an infinite void. With this, the total number of deaths caused solely by dengue this year has reached 299. This procession of death now stands right on the threshold of the tragic milestone of 300.
Bed Crises in Hospitals: The Agony of 1,631 New Fighters
Overwhelmed by the influx of patients, hospitals hardly have room to breathe. Within a span of just 24 hours, another 1,631 people suffering from dengue were admitted to hospital beds.
The Scenario in Dhaka:
92 patients were admitted under Dhaka North City Corporation, while the highest number of admissions—406 patients—was recorded in Dhaka South City Corporation. Outside these two city corporations, 205 patients are admitted to various other hospitals in Dhaka.
Rising Tides Outside Dhaka: The situation outside Dhaka is most alarming in Chattogram, where 234 patients were admitted in a single day. Additionally, dengue patients are currently suffering in hospitals across other divisions: 219 in Barishal, 184 in Khulna, 141 in Rajshahi, 75 in Rangpur, 61 in Mymensingh, and 14 in Sylhet.
Since January 1 of this year, a total of 97,082 people have been admitted to hospitals with dengue. Although 91,007 individuals were able to return home after treatment, 5,774 dengue patients are currently fighting for survival at the crossroads of life and death in various hospitals across the country.
A Shadow of Grief over Pediatric Wards: 8 Innocent Lives Lost to Measles Symptoms
Amidst the dengue panic, another cruel fate has descended upon the nation's children. In the last 24 hours alone, eight more innocent children died showing symptoms of measles. Before they could even understand the world around them, these helpless lives departed from the earth, plunging their parents into a lifelong ocean of tears.
Among the eight deceased children, 2 were from Dhaka division, 3 left arms empty in Sylhet, 2 were from Barishal division, and 1 child was from Khulna division. Although no confirmed deaths from measles were reported during this period, 81 new cases of the virus were identified. With this, the total number of confirmed measles cases this year has reached 20,282.
A History of Sorrow Month After Month
Since the beginning of the year, this death count has acted like a silent killer.
First Half of the Year: Dengue claimed 2 lives in January, 2 in February, 1 in May, and 13 in June.
The Dreadful Second Half: The situation took a turn for the worse starting in July, claiming 36 lives in July, 43 in August, and jumping drastically to 148 deaths in September.
Tragic Onset of October:
In just the first 10 days of October, 54 people have lost their lives.
This mathematical tally of deaths may remain recorded in official archives, but for the families who have lost their cherished ones, the arithmetic of life will never add up again. It is as if helpless humanity is merely passing days before a silent pandemic.
