The path of politics is never smooth, but for one who has forged a deep soul connection with her country and its people, distance or exile can never cause separation. Having led Bangladesh along the path of prosperity for 15 consecutive years and a total of five terms, Sheikh Hasina currently finds herself residing outside the country. Following those turbulent days of August 2024, she had been keeping a low profile. Breaking a long silence, her recent interview with the Indian newspaper The Hindu is not merely a political statement; it has turned into a deeply emotional testament of profound love for her motherland, unwavering faith in her countrymen, and a resolute stance to stand tall in the light of truth.

Bleeding August 5: Heartache and Compassion for the People

Right at the beginning of the interview, memories of August 5, 2024 emerge—the day she had to temporarily step away from her beloved birthplace. The depth of the pain of staying away from her homeland becomes clearly evident in Sheikh Hasina’s anxious voice. Out of immense love, Sheikh Hasina states that she never left her beloved Bangladesh of her own accord. She stepped aside solely to prioritize the protection of her countrymen's lives, to prevent further loss of life, and to stop the bloodshed.

She shares that she had to leave the location at the request of her colleagues and to keep her sister safe. She only learned that she was being taken to India after boarding the helicopter. The immense pain hidden behind leaving her home and beloved country can only be borne by a motherly guardian.

History Repeating Itself: India as a Sanctuary and a Beloved Homeland

Sheikh Hasina’s entire life resembles an epic struggle. On August 15, 1975, when she lost almost her entire family including her father Bangabandhu, she was also abroad. The Government of India provided refuge to her and her sister back then. Later in 1981, overcoming all obstacles and backed by the love of millions of people, she returned to her country. Attempts were also made to keep her away in 2007, but driven by the pull of the people, she returned again and again.

Sheikh Hasina told The Hindu that history seems to stand at a critical crossroads once again. At this juncture of her life, while she remains grateful for India’s hospitality, her heart belongs to the soil of Bangladesh. The sole reason for remaining so close to her country without seeking political asylum elsewhere is so that she can hear the heartbeat of her people. With deep conviction, she expresses that through the prayers of the people and the grace of the Creator, she will return among her beloved countrymen once again.

Freedom of Speech and the Triumph of Truth

Sheikh Hasina expressed surprise over attempts to silence her voice during her stay in India. Questioning how a single interview or speaking to people could disrupt bilateral relations between two nations, she stated that expressing the truth and speaking out is a fundamental right of every human being.

Reaffirming her deep faith in democracy and freedom, she said that freedom of speech is the lifeblood of society. She has once again raised her voice on the international stage to ensure that the voices of the country's journalists, media, and general public are not stifled.

‘My People’: A Mother's Affection for Bereaved and Persecuted Workers

The most sensitive and poignant part of the interview was when she explained the phrase "my people." Her deep motherly affection shone through for the millions of party workers and supporters who have trusted her throughout this long journey, and who now face various hardships and adversity. She asked emotionally, how could she forget those whose lives are currently in crisis and who are trapped in a web of falsehoods? However, beyond party workers, every ordinary citizen of the entire country belongs to her. Her empathy for bereaved families and her eagerness to stand by suffering people prove that no geographical distance can diminish her endless love for the people.

The Indomitable Light of Struggle and a Beacon of Hope

Sheikh Hasina expressed clear and firm views regarding her political stance and responsibilities. She stated that she remains ever ready to do whatever her party and the people of the country desire. To her, democratic ideals and the geographical and political sovereignty of Bangladesh hold far greater significance than positions or power. Her visionary warning that the Bay of Bengal or the country's sovereignty must not face any external harm reflects the duty and responsibility of a true statesman.

Having returned from the brink of death time and again, and continuing to fight for her country even at this stage of her life, this leader still holds onto hope. Her primary strength during this period abroad is her firm belief that Bangladesh will overcome this crisis and return to the path of peace, progress, and love. The appeal for justice she made to the international community is not a tone of defeat—rather, it is an indomitable commitment to truth, justice, and returning once again to the people of her country.
