The Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council made the claim at a press conference held at the National Press Club on Monday. In a written statement, Acting General Secretary of the council, Monindra Kumar Nath, said the organization had documented the deaths of 44 minority community members in 40 separate incidents between January and June this year. According to the council, five incidents of violence against minority women, including rape and gang rape, were recorded during the period. The organization also documented 15 incidents involving attacks on places of worship, vandalism of idols, attacks on Durga Puja venues, looting and arson. In addition, the council reported 15 incidents involving land grabbing or attempts to seize land during the first six months of the year. The organization also cited 47 incidents of attacks, vandalism, looting and arson targeting homes, businesses, places of worship and religious idols. The council further reported dozens of other alleged incidents involving abduction, extortion, enforced disappearance, torture, discrimination in the workplace, and the forcible occupation of homes, land and business establishments. Monindra Kumar Nath said that although the number of incidents varied across different categories, members of minority communities continued to experience a sense of insecurity. He alleged that victims of such abuses often do not receive justice and that effective action is rarely taken against those responsible.
