৩০ জুলাই যুক্তরাষ্ট্র–বাংলাদেশ দ্বিপক্ষীয় সম্পর্ক শক্তিশালী করতে ইতিবাচক আলোচনা হয়েছে বলে জানিয়েছেন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের দক্ষিণ ও মধ্য এশিয়াবিষয়ক বিশেষ দূত সার্জিও গর ও বাংলাদেশের পররাষ্ট্র উপদেষ্টা ড. খলিলুর রহমান। রাষ্ট্রীয় অতিথি ভবন পদ্মায় বৈঠকের পর সামাজিক যোগাযোগমাধ্যমে দেওয়া এক বার্তায় সার্জিও গর বলেন, যুক্তরাষ্ট্র–বাংলাদেশ দ্বিপক্ষীয় সম্পর্ক আরও শক্তিশালী করতে যৌথভাবে কাজ করার বিষয়ে বাংলাদেশের পররাষ্ট্র উপদেষ্টার সঙ্গে আলোচনা হয়েছে। এ ক্ষেত্রে অনেক ইতিবাচক অগ্রগতি হয়েছে।
অন্যদিকে পররাষ্ট্র উপদেষ্টা ড. খলিলুর রহমান সাংবাদিকদের বলেন, যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সঙ্গে সরকারের সম্পর্ক প্রথম দিন থেকেই ভালো। পাশে দাঁড়িয়ে পররাষ্ট্রবিষয়ক উপদেষ্টা হুমায়ুন কবির দাঁত বের করে হাসছিলেন। এই হাসির অর্থ কী?
আওয়ামী লীগ নিয়ে কি কোনো আলোচনা হয়েছে?
‘আওয়ামী লীগ অপ্রাসঙ্গিক’—দাঁত বের করে হাসতে হাসতে জবাব দিলেন হুমায়ুন।
রাখাইনে করিডর নিয়ে কি কোনো আলোচনা হয়েছে?
আমতা আমতা করে জবাব দেন ড. খলিলুর রহমান, ‘না, এ বিষয়ে কোনো আলোচনা হয়নি।’
মিয়ানমার–বাংলাদেশ নিয়ে কি কোনো আলোচনা হয়েছে?
ঠোঁট কামড়াতে কামড়াতে জবাব দেন খলিলুর রহমান, ‘না, এ বিষয়ে কোনো আলোচনা হয়নি।’
এরপর খলিলুর রহমান আরও গম্ভীর হয়ে ওঠেন। আবার প্রশ্ন করা হয়, চীনের সঙ্গে যে ছয়টি এমওইউ স্বাক্ষর হয়েছে, সেটি নিয়ে কি কোনো সমস্যা দেখা দিয়েছে?
আবারও খলিলুর রহমানের জবাব, ‘না, কোনো সমস্যা দেখা দেয়নি।’
ততক্ষণে খবর ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে, সম্মানিত অতিথিদের সম্মানে আয়োজিত নৈশভোজে সময়স্বল্পতা, খাদ্যনিরাপত্তা এবং অন্যান্য ইস্যুর কারণে আগত অতিথিরা যোগ দিচ্ছেন না। তখনও পররাষ্ট্রবিষয়ক উপদেষ্টা দাঁত বের করে হেসেই চলেছেন।
তাহলে আপনাদের মধ্যে এতক্ষণ ধরে কী নিয়ে কথা হলো?
ড. খলিলুর রহমান আবারও আমতা আমতা করে বলার চেষ্টা করেন, আগামী ৮ সেপ্টেম্বর জাতিসংঘের প্রথম অধিবেশনের সভাপতিত্ব এবং সংশ্লিষ্ট বিষয় নিয়ে আলোচনা হয়েছে—ইত্যাদি, ইত্যাদি।
যে সব প্রশ্ন বাংলাদেশের সাংবাদিকেরা করেননি, তা হলো—ম্যানিলায় এই অতিথিদের সঙ্গেই যখন আপনার বৈঠক হলো, আর পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয় যে ছবি সরবরাহ করল, তাতে আবারও প্রশ্ন দেখা দিল—সেখানে তাহলে আপনারা কী আলোচনা করেছিলেন?
বাংলাদেশের সাংবাদিকেরা যে প্রশ্ন করেননি, তেমন আরেকটি প্রশ্ন হলো—আপনারা কি কোনো সত্য লুকাতে চাইছেন?
খলিলুর রহমান স্পষ্ট ভাষায় বলেছেন, শুক্রবার সকালে রোহিঙ্গাদের সার্বিক পরিস্থিতি নিজ চোখে দেখার জন্য সার্জিও গর সেখানে যাচ্ছেন। রোহিঙ্গাদের এমন কী হয়েছে যে তাদের পরিস্থিতি এখন নিজ চোখে দেখতে সার্জিও গরকে সশরীরে সেখানে উপস্থিত থাকতে হবে?
বাংলাদেশের গণমাধ্যম যে খবরটি দেয়নি, তা হলো—৩০ জুলাই সম্মানিত অতিথিদের আসার আগেই সকাল ১১টা ১০ মিনিটে খলিলুর রহমানের সঙ্গে দেখা করেছেন ঢাকায় নিযুক্ত চীনের রাষ্ট্রদূত। সেই বৈঠকে বেইজিংয়ের প্রতি বাংলাদেশের যে অঙ্গীকার, সেটি অক্ষরে অক্ষরে পালন করা হবে বলেও প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছেন ড. খলিলুর রহমান।
এর ঠিক ২০ মিনিট পর একই কক্ষে প্রবেশ করেন ঢাকায় নিযুক্ত পাকিস্তানের হাইকমিশনার। সেই বৈঠকটিও ২০ থেকে ২৫ মিনিট স্থায়ী হয়।
প্রশ্ন হচ্ছে, তাহলে কোন বিষয়টি আড়াল করছে বাংলাদেশের পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়?
সার্জিও গরের এত কষ্ট করে ঢাকায় আসা—তা কি কেবল উপদেষ্টা হুমায়ুনের দাঁত কেলানো হাসি আর খলিলুর রহমানের ঠোঁট কামড়ে আমতা আমতা করে সব প্রশ্নের জবাব দেওয়ার বিব্রতকর পরিস্থিতি দেখতেই?
নিন্দুকেরা বলছে, রোহিঙ্গাদের বাঁচিয়ে রাখতে যে আন্তর্জাতিক অর্থায়ন করা হচ্ছে, সেখান থেকে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র সরে যেতে পারে।
অন্যদিকে চীন বলছে, যুক্তরাষ্ট্র সরে গেলে সেই অর্থায়নের দায়িত্ব বেইজিং নিতে প্রস্তুত।
খলিল গম্ভীর, আর হুমায়ুনের দাঁত কেলানো হাসি—এটাই কি তবে সমাধান?

On July 30, U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs Sergio Gor and Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman stated that their discussions on strengthening U.S.–Bangladesh bilateral relations had been positive.
Following the meeting at the State Guest House Padma, Sergio Gor wrote on social media that he had held discussions with Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser on working together to further strengthen bilateral relations between the United States and Bangladesh. According to him, the talks resulted in significant positive progress.
Speaking to journalists afterward, Dr. Khalilur Rahman said that the government's relationship with the United States had been good from the very beginning. Standing beside him, Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir smiled broadly throughout the briefing.
But what did that smile mean?
Was there any discussion regarding the Awami League?
"The Awami League is irrelevant," Humayun replied with a wide smile.
Was there any discussion about the proposed Rakhine corridor?
Dr. Khalilur Rahman hesitated before answering, "No, there was no discussion on that issue."
Was Myanmar–Bangladesh discussed?
Biting his lip before responding, Khalilur Rahman again replied, "No, that issue was not discussed."
He then appeared even more serious. Another question followed:
Have any problems emerged regarding the six Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed with China?
Once again, Khalilur Rahman answered, "No, no problems have arisen."
Meanwhile, reports began circulating that the visiting dignitaries would not attend the official dinner hosted in their honor, reportedly because of time constraints, food safety concerns, and other issues. Even then, Humayun Kabir continued smiling broadly.
So what exactly had been discussed during the lengthy meeting?
Dr. Khalilur Rahman again struggled to answer, saying that discussions had focused on matters related to the opening session of the United Nations on September 8 and other related issues.
There were also questions that Bangladeshi journalists did not ask.
If meetings had already taken place with these same visitors in Manila, and if the Ministry of Foreign Affairs later released photographs from those meetings, what exactly had been discussed there?
Another obvious question is whether the authorities are attempting to conceal certain facts.
Dr. Khalilur Rahman clearly stated that Sergio Gor would travel on Friday morning to personally observe the overall situation of the Rohingya population.
But what has happened to the Rohingyas that requires Sergio Gor himself to visit and assess the situation firsthand?
One detail that Bangladesh's media largely did not report is that, on July 30, before the distinguished guests arrived, at around 11:10 a.m., Dr. Khalilur Rahman met with the Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh. During that meeting, he reportedly assured Beijing that Bangladesh would honor its commitments to China in full.
Exactly twenty minutes later, the Pakistani High Commissioner to Bangladesh entered the same meeting room. That meeting also lasted approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
The question, therefore, is this:
What exactly is Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs trying to keep out of public view?
Did Sergio Gor make the journey to Dhaka merely to witness Adviser Humayun's broad smile and Dr. Khalilur Rahman's hesitant, lip-biting responses to difficult questions?
Critics argue that the United States may reduce or even withdraw its financial support for international assistance aimed at sustaining the Rohingya refugee population.
China, on the other hand, has reportedly indicated that if Washington steps back, Beijing would be prepared to assume that financial responsibility.
Khalil appears serious, while Humayun continues smiling.
Is that really the solution?
