শ্রাবণ মাসের সেই কালো রাতে যখন ঘাতকের নির্মম বুলেটে থেমে গিয়েছিল একটি অদম্য প্রাণ, তখন কেবল এক তরুণের জীবনপ্রদীপ নেভেনি; বরং থমকে গিয়েছিল একটি সদ্য স্বাধীন দেশের বহুমাত্রিক স্বপ্নের অভিযাত্রা। জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধুর জ্যেষ্ঠ পুত্র, বীর মুক্তিযোদ্ধা ক্যাপ্টেন শেখ কামাল ছিলেন তেমনই এক নক্ষত্র, যাঁর আলো মুছে ফেলার জন্য ইতিহাস বিকৃতির জঘন্যতম খেলা খেলেছিল ঘাতকচক্র ও তাদের সুবিধাভোগীরা। শৈশবে যাঁর নামে শুনেছি কত না কুৎসিত মিথ্যাচার, সময়ের পরিক্রমায় স্কুল, কলেজ ও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অঙ্গনে তাঁর শিক্ষক, সহকর্মী আর ইতিহাসের সত্যভাষীদের মুখ থেকে তাঁকে চেনার পর হৃদয়ে জেগে ওঠে গভীর বিস্ময় ও শ্রদ্ধা। উপলব্ধি করা যায়—তিনি ছিলেন এক ট্র্যাজিক নায়ক, যার রক্তে মিশে ছিল অপার দেশপ্রেম, সততা ও অমিত নেতৃত্বগুণ।
শেখ কামাল ছিলেন একাধারে অসামান্য ক্রীড়াবিদ, অনন্য ক্রীড়া সংগঠক, অনুকরণীয় নাট্যকর্মী ও তুখোড় ছাত্রনেতা। স্বাধীনতা-উত্তর বাংলাদেশে যখন পৃথিবীর তরুণ সমাজ পথ হারানোর ঝুঁকিতে ছিল, তখন তিনি বাংলাদেশের যুবসমাজকে যুক্ত করেছিলেন খেলাধুলা, শিল্প-সংস্কৃতি ও সৃজনশীল রাজনীতির ইতিবাচক স্রোতে। রাষ্ট্র ও সরকারের শীর্ষতম পরাক্রমশালী পরিবারের সন্তান হয়েও ক্ষমতার মোহ তাঁকে স্পর্শ করতে পারেনি। সেনাবাহিনীর লোভনীয় পদ ছেড়ে সাধারণ কর্মী হিসেবে মাঠে নেমেছিলেন দেশ গড়ার কাজে। ক্ষমতার আলো থেকে দূরে থেকে মেধা, স্পষ্টবাদিতা আর ত্যাগ দিয়ে তরুণদের মন জয় করাই ছিল তাঁর মূল দর্শন। সমকালীন বিশ্ব রাজনীতিতে কোনো রাষ্ট্রপ্রধানের সন্তানে এমন বিরল ও নির্মোহ ব্যক্তিত্বের সন্ধান পাওয়া দুষ্কর।
পঁচাত্তরের রক্তাক্ত পটপরিবর্তনের পর খুনিচক্র খুব ভালো করেই জানত—শেখ কামালের মতো বহুমাত্রিক ও চৌকস তরুণ নেতার আদর্শ যদি তরুণ প্রজন্ম জানতে পারে, তবে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের আদর্শকে কখনোই মুছে ফেলা যাবে না। তাই তারা সুপরিকল্পিতভাবে ছড়াতে থাকে জঘন্য অপপ্রচার ও মনগড়া ইতিহাস। ব্যাংক ডাকাতির মতো জঘন্য মিথ্যা গল্প সাজিয়ে বীর পিতাসহ এই বীর সন্তানকে কলঙ্কিত করার অপচেষ্টা চালানো হয়েছিল। কিন্তু সত্যের আলো কখনো দীর্ঘকাল চাপা থাকে না। ইতিহাস সাক্ষী, বঙ্গবন্ধু পরিবারের কোনো বেআইনি ধন-সম্পদের অস্তিত্ব কোথাও ছিল না; খুনিদের প্রতিটি কল্পিত অভিযোগই কালের নিয়মে মিথ্যা প্রমাণিত হয়েছে।
আজ বড় অনুতাপ হয়, শেখ কামাল যদি বেঁচে থাকতেন! তাহলে হয়তো এ দেশের রাজনীতি আরও অনেক আগেই মেধাভিত্তিক ও সৃজনশীল রূপ পেত। তাঁর মতো দূরদর্শী মানুষ পাশে থাকলে রাষ্ট্র পরিচালনায় তাঁর অগ্রজ, দেশরত্ন শেখ হাসিনার পথচলা হতো আরও সুগম; আর সংস্কৃতি ও ক্রীড়াঙ্গনে বাংলাদেশ বিশ্বমঞ্চে বহুদূর এগিয়ে যেত। তবে তাঁর সেই আদর্শের ধারা আজও থেমে নেই। বিশ্বের ক্ষমতাধর রাজনৈতিক পরিবারগুলো যখন সময়ের সাথে ম্লান হয়ে যায়, সেখানে বঙ্গবন্ধুর পরিবার মেধা, জ্ঞান-বিজ্ঞান ও বিশ্বমঞ্চে অনন্য অবদানের মাধ্যমে আজ আরও বেশি উদ্ভাসিত ও নন্দিত।
ইতিহাসে মানুষের জাগতিক অবসান ঘটলেও তার আদর্শিক সত্তা চির অমলিন থাকে। ঘাতকেরা শেখ কামালের শরীরকে স্তব্ধ করলেও তাঁর জাগ্রত সত্তাকে বাঙালি হৃদয় থেকে মুছে ফেলতে পারেনি। কিন্তু কেবল স্মৃতিরোমন্থন নয়, আজ সময় এসেছে সরকারি ও বেসরকারি উদ্যোগে শেখ কামালের বহুমাত্রিক ব্যক্তিত্ব, সমাজভাবনা ও রাষ্ট্রচিন্তা নিয়ে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় পর্যায়ে ব্যাপক গবেষণার।
আজ এই মহান ও কিংবদন্তিতুল্য তরুণ নেতার শুভ জন্মদিনে আমাদের বুকভরা ভালোবাসা ও সশ্রদ্ধ প্রণতি। আপনি আমাদের স্বপ্ন ও প্রেরণার চিরন্তন নায়ক। বাঙালির হৃদয়ে, ইতিহাসের প্রতি পাতায় আপনি অমর হয়ে থাকবেন বহ্নিশিখার মতো।

On that dark night in the month of Shrabon, when an indomitable life was cut short by the assassin's brutal bullets, it was not merely the candle of a young man's life that was extinguished; rather, the multidimensional journey of dreams for a newly independent nation came to a standstill. Captain Sheikh Kamal—the eldest son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu and a heroic freedom fighter—was such a star, whose light the perpetrators and their beneficiaries attempted to erase through a heinous game of distorting history. Hearing so many vile fabrications about him during childhood, learning about him in school, college, and university through his teachers, colleagues, and truthful historians later filled the heart with profound wonder and respect. One realizes that he was a tragic hero whose blood was infused with boundless patriotism, integrity, and formidable leadership qualities.
Sheikh Kamal was simultaneously an extraordinary athlete, a unique sports organizer, an exemplary theater activist, and a sharp student leader. In post-independence Bangladesh, when youth around the world were at risk of losing their way, he guided the young generation of Bangladesh toward the positive streams of sports, art, culture, and creative politics. Despite being a child of the most powerful family in the state and government, the allure of power never touched him. Leaving behind a lucrative military career, he stepped into the field as an ordinary worker to build the nation. Staying away from the spotlight of power and winning the hearts of the youth through talent, candor, and sacrifice was his core philosophy. In contemporary global politics, finding such a rare and unpretentious personality in the child of any head of state is difficult to come by.
After the bloody shift of 1975, the assassin clique knew very well that if the young generation learned about the ideals of a multidimensional and brilliant young leader like Sheikh Kamal, the values of the Liberation War could never be erased. Therefore, they systematically began spreading heinous propaganda and fabricated history. Sordid falsehoods like bank robbery were orchestrated in a vile attempt to tarnish both the heroic father and his heroic son. But the light of truth cannot remain buried forever. History bears witness that no illegal wealth of the Bangabandhu family ever existed anywhere; every imaginary allegation made by the killers has been proven false over time.
Today, there is deep regret—if only Sheikh Kamal were alive! Perhaps the politics of this country would have gained a merit-based and creative dimension much sooner. With a visionary like him by her side, the journey of his elder sister, Deshratna Sheikh Hasina, in state governance would have been smoother, and Bangladesh would have advanced much farther on the global stage in culture and sports. Yet, the stream of his ideals has not halted. While powerful political families around the world fade with time, Bangabandhu's family shines even brighter and garners acclaim globally through intellect, knowledge, science, and exceptional contributions.
Though a person's physical existence ends in history, their ideological self remains timelessly pristine. While the assassins stilled Sheikh Kamal's physical body, they could not erase his living presence from the hearts of Bengalis. But beyond mere nostalgia, the time has come to initiate extensive university-level research through public and private initiatives on Sheikh Kamal’s multidimensional personality, social vision, and state philosophy.
On the auspicious birthday of this great and legendary young leader, we offer our heart-filled love and respectful homage. You are the eternal hero of our dreams and inspiration. In the hearts of Bengalis and on every page of history, you will remain immortal like a glowing flame.
