The unusually high number of child deaths caused by measles in Bangladesh has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of the country's public health system. According to various reports, nearly 750 children died after contracting measles between March 15 and July 10—a span of just 117 days. As measles is a vaccine-preventable disease, public health experts say such a death toll points to significant failures in the country's immunization system.
Statistics indicate that around 4 million children were left out of the recent mass vaccination campaign. This has inevitably raised critical questions: Why did vaccination coverage fall so sharply? Why were there delays in vaccine procurement and distribution? And despite early warnings, why were timely and effective measures not taken?
To effectively control measles and achieve herd immunity, at least 95 percent of children must be vaccinated. Critics allege that the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus adopted vaccine procurement policies that disrupted the timely acquisition and distribution of adequate vaccine supplies. As a result, vaccination coverage reportedly dropped below the critical 95 percent threshold, potentially contributing to the spread of measles and the rising number of child deaths. However, these allegations have not been substantiated by any independent investigation or judicial ruling to date.
Bangladesh's Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) was once internationally recognized as one of the country's most successful public health initiatives. Against that backdrop, the current situation is particularly alarming. A transparent, independent, and evidence-based investigation is urgently needed to determine the actual causes of these preventable child deaths, assess the impact of policy decisions, and ensure accountability where warranted.
