Strict Message from the European Union and a New Crisis in Bilateral Trade
At an international conference organized by the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS) at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka, a diplomatic statement by the European Union (EU) revealed a concerning new picture of Bangladesh's foreign trade. Major European nations, including France, have clearly stated that unless equal and non-discriminatory opportunities (a level playing field) are ensured in trade, European countries will refrain from expanding investment and commercial relations in Bangladesh.
Discriminatory Trade Policy and Aircraft Procurement Diplomacy: The Boeing vs. Airbus Debate
A striking example of trade discrimination emerged in discussions regarding aircraft purchase contracts. In the past, to maintain good relations with EU member states and introduce commercial diversification, there was a plan to purchase aircraft from the European consortium Airbus. The main objective was to break the monopoly and reduce spare parts and maintenance costs.
• Change of Contract: In recent times, this plan was abandoned in favor of deciding to purchase additional aircraft from the US company Boeing.
• Double Standards: According to Dr. Momen, failing to maintain equality in trade and agreements with Europe, while showing excessive bias toward a particular side, has generated anger and frustration among EU nations.
GSP+ Facilities and the Potential Blow to Export Trade
In 2026, Bangladesh is on track to graduate from the LDC (Least Developed Country) category. After graduating from LDC status, securing GSP+ facilities was critically important to maintaining duty-free market access in European markets.
• Vulnerable Export Sector: Nearly 22% of Bangladesh’s total exports go to the European market. If the European Union imposes strict regulations or halts investment citing trade discrimination, the entire economy, starting with the ready-made garment sector, will face severe disaster.
• Investment Stagnation: This policy opacity and discriminatory behavior have also played a major role in the failure to attract desired levels of foreign investment from European countries over the past two and a half years.
The Interrelationship Between Political Discrimination and Economic Stability
Alongside commercial policies, the discriminatory nature of domestic politics has also drawn international attention. Limiting the electoral participation of the country's largest political party, sweeping legal actions, and the absence of a level playing field in administration have made foreign partners skeptical. Economics and politics are deeply intertwined. If unilateral political decisions and discriminatory trade policies continue, it will create the risk of losing international markets on one hand, while domestic investment and employment collapse to create an extreme economic crisis.
The Path to Resolution and the Necessity of Dialogue
This EU warning serves as a major political and economic signal for the current government. If a level playing field of equality—both in trade and politics—is not ensured by moving away from discriminatory policies, there will be no alternative to losing international trade partners. To avert the country's current economic plight and potential disasters, bringing all political parties together in a meaningful dialogue to restore democratic stability and a transparent diplomatic environment is the greatest demand of the time.
