The Padma Bridge Rail Link, one of Bangladesh's largest infrastructure projects, is facing growing security concerns following a series of thefts targeting critical railway signaling equipment. Repeated incidents in the Shibchar and Padma station areas have disabled parts of the automatic signaling system, forcing trains to operate manually and increasing the risk of accidents while disrupting schedules. Railway officials said that nine of the thirteen track pots installed on the northern side of Shibchar Station have already been stolen. Over the past few months, thieves have also taken track transformers, signaling cables, axle counters, point machines, fish bolts, and other essential railway components. Padma Station Master Md. Khairul Islam warned that the loss of signaling equipment has created serious operational risks and could lead to major accidents if security is not strengthened immediately. Shibchar Station Master Md. Kamrul Islam said trains are now being operated using the manual "look stick" system, exposing both railway staff and passengers to greater danger. Railway Police stated that cases have been filed and several suspects arrested, while surveillance has been intensified. However, local residents argue that the existing security measures remain inadequate for protecting such a vital national asset. They have called for permanent security outposts, modern surveillance systems, and a coordinated crackdown on organized theft rings to safeguard the railway infrastructure.
