The departure of certain individuals is not merely the death of a person; it is the silencing of a time, an era, or a familiar voice. The passing of journalist Toufiq Imrose Khalidi is precisely such an event for me. I share personal memories with him; therefore, it was not possible for me to read the news of his death and simply move on like many other news items. Again and again, I am reminded of the moments we met, talked, and discussed his thoughts on journalism.
Toufiq Imrose Khalidi is a significant name in the history of online journalism in Bangladesh. He did not merely run bdnews24.com as a media outlet; he was also a vital part of the era that transformed how news was delivered in Bangladesh. When online journalism was not as established as it is today, building a news agency as a new-genre media platform was no easy task. He was one of the true pioneers of that path.
Whenever I spoke with him, I could feel a distinct sense of accountability he held regarding journalism. He did not view news merely as something to be published quickly; he also reflected deeply on institutional responsibility, professional freedom, and the dignity of journalism. Despite differences of opinion at various times, having the opportunity to converse with him about the work of a journalist and the necessity of journalism was truly valuable.
In my personal memory, Toufiq Bhai holds another even more important identity: he was a steadfast supporter of the Liberation War. His stance regarding the history of Bangladesh’s independence, the spirit of the Liberation War, and the aspirations of a secular state was crystal clear. As a journalist, I have always looked upon this stance of his with deep respect. Because professional neutrality in journalism does not mean denying the historical truth; rather, standing on the side of truth, freedom, and human dignity is an essential duty of journalism.
Throughout his long career, just as praise came his way, so did controversies and allegations. Investigations and cases were filed concerning allegations of corruption and illegal wealth. Later, those cases were withdrawn, and by court order, he was absolved of those charges. He did not lose courage for even a single moment; he faced everything legally. How many people in Bangladesh possess such courage, I do not know.
Toufiq Imrose Khalidi passed away at a hospital in London. The space he carved out in the media of Bangladesh over his 59 years of life is not easily filled. Especially with the growth and development of online journalism, his name will be uttered for a long time to come.
Personally, his departure feels like a familiar chapter has suddenly closed. There are some people we do not see every day or speak with regularly, yet they remain permanent fixtures in the memories of our professional lives. Toufiq Imrose Khalidi was precisely such a person to me.
From now on, the memories I shared with him will come to mind even more frequently. The busyness of journalism, the moments of conversation, his steadfastness, and his identity as a media worker devoted to the Liberation War—all together, he will live on in my memory.
I pray for the peace of his departed soul. My deepest condolences go out to his family, colleagues, and loved ones. Farewell, Toufiq Bhai. The memories we shared will remain.
