On the eve of assuming power, there were countless promises—that the rule of law would be restored, the wheels of the economy would turn, new avenues of employment would open through domestic and foreign investments, and Bangladesh would emerge as a modern, dynamic, and well-governed state. However, after the passage of a long 18 months, the overall reality of the country has dealt a cruel blow to those sky-high expectations. According to conscious citizens and analysts, contrary to expectations, Bangladesh today has plunged into deep and unprecedented uncertainty across its three fundamental pillars: law and order, the economy, and foreign policy.
The most alarming charge is that during this period, "mob culture"—or pressure from organized, aggressive crowds—has effectively been turned into an unruly political reality. In the face of land grabbing, attacks on businesses, anarchy, and overt psychological and physical coercion exerted upon the administration, state authorities have displayed little to no firm stance. Clearly, an anarchic environment has been created where, instead of the rule of law, the irrational demands of aggressive mobs have become the primary determinant of decisions. Whether an unorganized group demands the cancellation of examinations or exerts unreasonable pressure for the arrest or release of an accused person, the state apparatus continuously exhibits a subservient posture. As a result, an indescribable culture of fear has taken permanent root across the country in place of the rule of law.
In the economic sphere as well, a vast gap between expectations and grim reality has emerged. Civil society figures claimed that under the stewardship of renowned international experts, the country's economy would reach new heights. In reality, all avenues for domestic industrial growth, attracting investment, and generating employment have been blocked. Furthermore, grave allegations have surfaced that national interests are being sacrificed to prioritize the motives of foreign geopolitical powers. The government’s shortsighted policy stance regarding the country’s strategically vital assets and core infrastructure threatens to severely endanger Bangladesh’s sovereign economic autonomy in the future.
The final nail in the coffin appears to have been driven into the country's private sector. Due to politically motivated lawsuits against series of entrepreneurs, widespread freezing of bank accounts, planned attacks on factories, vandalism, arson, and an ongoing energy crisis, the confidence of both local and foreign investors has hit rock bottom. As a direct consequence, manufacturing sectors are shutting down one after another, new employment creation has come to a standstill, and unemployment continues to rise. When a state fails miserably to provide minimum security to its productive sectors and entrepreneurs, the collapse of its economic foundation is merely a matter of time.
The greatest apprehension and concern, however, stems from the government’s subservient foreign policy. In particular, the current stance in dealing with the ongoing complex crisis in Myanmar is pushing Bangladesh toward a dangerous geopolitical conflict. While neighboring states like India, China, and Thailand are maintaining a carefully balanced diplomatic posture, if Bangladesh appears to lean toward any particular side, it will spell disaster for the nation's security, border stability, trade, and multidimensional international relations.
In conclusion, the insecurity and economic risks specific to the Cox's Bazar region are plunging the entire nation into a state of instability. Should the border situation deteriorate further, tourism, local trade, and the basic livelihoods of millions of people will be jeopardized. Thus, a single diplomatic misstep or an shortsighted foreign policy risks casting a permanent shadow over the nation's future. The bedrock of a responsible government is deep public trust, the sovereignty of law, and a robust statecraft. But when the driving forces of that state become mob terror, economic stagnation, and flawed international diplomacy, ordinary citizens are left with no choice but to fear a dark future. History bears witness that weak domestic policies, a dysfunctional economy, and a fragile foreign policy silently drive a state toward ultimate destruction.
