The government has initiated the process of placing 17 additional senior police officers on compulsory retirement as part of what it describes as a broader effort to restore political neutrality, strengthen accountability, and restructure the country's law enforcement institutions. According to multiple sources at the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Home Affairs, a proposal seeking approval for disciplinary action against the officers has already been submitted to the Prime Minister's Office. If approved, an official gazette notification is expected to be issued shortly.
Documents related to the process indicate that the allegations against the officers fall into three broad categories: political bias, abuse of authority, and financial or administrative misconduct. The allegations include involvement in suppressing political opposition, leaking confidential state information, conducting unauthorized telephone surveillance, and influencing electoral processes. Several officers have also been accused of corruption, involvement in drug trafficking, embezzlement of public funds, and other forms of professional misconduct.
The documents further examine the officers' alleged past political affiliations, their family political backgrounds, state honors and medals they received, as well as government-funded overseas visits. According to officials involved in the review, these factors are being assessed as part of a broader evaluation of administrative neutrality and professional integrity.
Observers view the latest move as part of a continuing government campaign rather than an isolated administrative decision. Earlier, 33 senior police officers were compulsorily retired under the same policy. On May 3, 17 officers were retired, while another 13 officers were subjected to the same measure on April 22.
Analysts say the successive actions reflect the government's broader effort to reorganize the law enforcement establishment and reduce political influence within the police force. At the same time, they emphasize that the credibility of the process will ultimately depend on whether the allegations are supported by due legal process, transparent investigations, and adequate opportunities for the accused office
