Security of Life is Questionable Today: The Grim Reality of Mob Violence and Impunity
In a civilized society, nothing is more valuable than human life and dignity. Yet, recent statistics point a finger directly at where we currently stand. According to the September report by Manabadhikar Sangskriti Foundation (MSF), 23 precious lives were lost to "mob" violence or public fury across the country in just one month. This reckless tendency to take the law into one's own hands has created a deep wound in every pore of our society. Where is this savagery—beating people to death over theft, robbery, or minor arguments—dragging us?
The Dungeon of Prisons and the Agony of Protectors Turning Predators
If a person's life light is snuffed out inside a prison or custody—an institution meant to ensure law and justice—where will people seek sanctuary? It is a matter of profound concern that while 9 people died in custody in August, that number spiked to 24 in September! Such consecutive deaths in the custody of those entrusted with protection place the entire state apparatus in the dock. Furthermore, the tragic death of a woman in law enforcement custody has severely shaken our humanitarian conscience.
Minority Communities and the Sanctity of Places of Worship Caught in a Web of Uncertainty
Whether majority or minority, security is the birthright of every citizen. Yet, the incidents that unfolded across various parts of the country in September have brought us shame. The MSF report reveals that at least 10 idols were vandalized and incidents of ethnic persecution occurred in various places during this single month. The utter audacity of slaughtering a cow for a picnic at the Kushtia crematorium and the perversion of taking photos wearing shoes on sacred funeral pyres and tombs clearly expose the profound degradation of our religious and social values.
Choking the Press and the Procession of Unidentified Bodies
Journalists, known as the fourth pillar of the state, are not safe today either. Although physical assaults have decreased slightly, legal harassment and the web of cases under digital security laws are constantly expanding. In September, 28 journalists fell victim to torture, and numerous people faced harassment through eight digital cases. Meanwhile, the recovery of 71 unidentified bodies from various parts of the country—including 55 men and 15 women—shows us the terrifying levels criminal activity has reached in society. Additionally, the casualties of Bangladeshi citizens from BSF gunfire along the border and attempts at push-ins remain a chronic source of pain regarding the country's overall sovereignty and security.
Removing the Shroud of Darkness to Kindle the Light of Humanity
This bloody and sorrowful picture of September is not merely a collection of statistics; it is a pathetic document of our collective failure. If we fail to prevent mob terror, custodial deaths, idol vandalism, and these extreme violations of human rights, we will not survive as a healthy nation. Now is the time, transcending party lines, to stand up against this social and state degradation. Restoring the realization that every human life is valuable—and building a safe, humane Bangladesh—let this be our sole vow today.
