এই অমর পঙ্ক্তি শুধু কবিতার অলংকার নয়; এটি মানবসভ্যতার এক চিরন্তন সত্য। ইতিহাস যখন কোনো মহান নেতার নাম উচ্চারণ করে, তখন তাঁর পাশে নীরবে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা একজন নারীর অবদানও সমানভাবে উচ্চারিত হওয়া উচিত। কারণ ইতিহাসের অনেক বিজয়, অনেক সংগ্রাম এবং অনেক সাফল্যের পেছনে থাকে এক নিঃশব্দ শক্তি—একজন মা, একজন স্ত্রী, একজন সহযোদ্ধা।
বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাসে সেই নীরব শক্তির নাম বঙ্গমাতা শেখ ফজিলাতুননেছা মুজিব।
আজ তাঁর জন্মদিনে আমরা শুধু একজন মহান নেতার সহধর্মিণীকে স্মরণ করছি না; আমরা স্মরণ করছি এমন এক মহীয়সী নারীকে, যিনি নিজের জীবন, স্বপ্ন ও সুখ বিসর্জন দিয়ে একটি জাতির ইতিহাস নির্মাণে অনন্য ভূমিকা রেখেছেন।
তৎকালীন সমাজব্যবস্থার প্রচলিত রীতিনীতি অনুযায়ী অল্প বয়সেই তাঁর সঙ্গে শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের বিবাহ হয়। সময়ের পরিক্রমায় সেই কিশোরী রেণুই হয়ে ওঠেন বঙ্গবন্ধুর জীবনের সবচেয়ে বড় আস্থার ঠিকানা। তিনি কখনো ক্ষমতার অংশীদার হতে চাননি; তিনি হতে চেয়েছিলেন সংগ্রামী এক মানুষের সাহসের উৎস।
যখন বঙ্গবন্ধু ভাষা আন্দোলন, ছয় দফা, গণঅভ্যুত্থান এবং স্বাধীনতার সংগ্রামে নেতৃত্ব দিতে গিয়ে বারবার কারাবন্দি হয়েছেন, তখন বঙ্গমাতা শেখ ফজিলাতুননেছা মুজিব নীরবে এক অসাধারণ দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন। বঙ্গবন্ধু তাঁর রাজনৈতিক জীবনের একটি বড় অংশ কারাগারে কাটিয়েছেন। কিন্তু তাঁর দীর্ঘ অনুপস্থিতির সময়ে বঙ্গমাতা শুধু সংসারের হালই ধরেননি; তিনি আন্দোলনের সঙ্গে সম্পৃক্ত নেতা-কর্মীদের পাশে থেকেছেন, তাঁদের সাহস, প্রেরণা ও মানসিক শক্তি যুগিয়েছেন। রাজনৈতিক সংকটের কঠিন সময়ে তাঁর বাসভবন নেতা-কর্মীদের জন্য মায়ের মমতাময়ী আস্থার এক নিরাপদ আশ্রয়ে পরিণত হয়েছিল।
বঙ্গমাতা অত্যন্ত বিচক্ষণতার সঙ্গে রাজনৈতিক পরিস্থিতি পর্যবেক্ষণ করতেন। প্রয়োজনে বঙ্গবন্ধুর রাজনৈতিক চিন্তা ও দিকনির্দেশনার আলোকে নেতা-কর্মীদের উৎসাহিত করতেন এবং আন্দোলনের ধারাবাহিকতা বজায় রাখতে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করতেন। তিনি বুঝতেন, একজন মানুষের মুক্তি নয়, একটি জাতির মুক্তির সংগ্রাম চলছে। তাই ব্যক্তিগত কষ্টকে কখনো জাতীয় স্বার্থের ঊর্ধ্বে স্থান দেননি।
একই সঙ্গে তিনি বঙ্গবন্ধুর পরিবারের সদস্যদের প্রতি গভীর মমত্ববোধ, দায়িত্বশীলতা ও স্নেহের পরিচয় দিয়েছেন। সন্তানদের শুধু একজন পিতার অনুপস্থিতির কষ্ট থেকে আগলে রাখেননি, তাঁদের মধ্যে দেশপ্রেম, আদর্শ, শৃঙ্খলা ও আত্মত্যাগের শিক্ষা গড়ে তুলেছিলেন. তাঁহার উজ্জ্বল উদাহরণ জন নেত্রী শেখ হাসিনা ষিনি পিতার মত অকুতোভয় সংগ্রামী সাহস এবং মায়ের মত মাতৃত্ব ও আত্মা ত্যগের এক অনন্য দৃষ্টান্ত .সীমাহীন অনিশ্চয়তা, আর্থিক সংকট, নজরদারি এবং রাজনৈতিক চাপের মধ্যেও তিনি সংসারকে দৃঢ়তার সঙ্গে পরিচালনা করেছেন, যাতে বঙ্গবন্ধু কারাগারে থেকেও পরিবারের ভবিষ্যৎ নিয়ে উদ্বিগ্ন না হন।
ইতিহাস সাক্ষ্য দেয়, বঙ্গবন্ধুর রাজনৈতিক জীবনের বহু সংকটময় মুহূর্তে বঙ্গমাতার ধৈর্য, প্রজ্ঞা ও সাহস তাঁকে শক্তি জুগিয়েছে। প্রচারের আলো থেকে দূরে থেকেও তিনি ছিলেন ইতিহাসের অন্যতম নীরব নির্মাতা। স্বাধীনতার স্বপ্ন বাস্তবায়নের পথে বঙ্গবন্ধুর সংগ্রামকে তিনি নিজের সংগ্রাম হিসেবে গ্রহণ করেছিলেন।
১৯৭১ সালের মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সময় পাকিস্তানি হানাদার বাহিনীর বন্দি অবস্থায় থেকেও তিনি ভেঙে পড়েননি। ব্যক্তিগত নিরাপত্তার চেয়ে তিনি দেশের স্বাধীনতাকে বড় করে দেখেছিলেন। তাঁর ধৈর্য, আত্মত্যাগ ও মানসিক দৃঢ়তা মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ইতিহাসে এক অনন্য অধ্যায়।
কিন্তু ইতিহাসের নির্মমতম অধ্যায় আসে ১৯৭৫ সালের ১৫ আগস্ট। স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশের স্থপতি বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের সঙ্গে বঙ্গমাতাও ঘাতকদের নির্মম হত্যাকাণ্ডের শিকার হন। তিনি জীবন দিয়ে প্রমাণ করে গেছেন—যিনি সংগ্রামের সঙ্গী, তিনি আত্মত্যাগেরও সঙ্গী।
আজকের বাংলাদেশে নারীর নেতৃত্ব, ক্ষমতায়ন ও আত্মমর্যাদার কথা যখন আমরা বলি, তখন বঙ্গমাতার জীবন আমাদের সামনে এক উজ্জ্বল আদর্শ হয়ে দাঁড়ায়। তিনি প্রমাণ করেছেন, নেতৃত্ব সব সময় মঞ্চে দাঁড়িয়ে দেওয়া ভাষণে নয়; অনেক সময় নীরব ত্যাগ, ধৈর্য, প্রজ্ঞা এবং আত্মনিবেদনের মধ্য দিয়েও ইতিহাস সৃষ্টি হয়।
আজ তাঁর জন্মদিনে আমাদের অঙ্গীকার হোক—আমরা এমন একটি বাংলাদেশ গড়ে তুলব, যেখানে প্রতিটি নারী সম্মান, মর্যাদা ও সমান সুযোগ ও অধিকার লাভ করবে; যেখানে দেশপ্রেম, সততা, মানবিকতা এবং মনুষ্যত্ব উৎকর্ষতাই হবে জাতীয় জীবনের মূল ভিত্তি।
বঙ্গমাতা শেখ ফজিলাতুননেছা মুজিব শুধু বঙ্গবন্ধুর সহধর্মিণী ছিলেন না; তিনি ছিলেন তাঁর সাহস, শক্তি, প্রেরণা এবং স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশের স্বপ্ন বাস্তবায়নের এক নীরব আলোকবর্তিকা । তাঁর অবদান ইতিহাসের পাতায় যেমন অম্লান, বঙ্গমাতার অবদান কালের বিবর্তনে শত শত বছর পরেও বাঙালির হৃদয়ে সমানভাবে প্রাসঙ্গিক হয়ে শ্রদ্ধাভরে স্মরণীয় হয়ে থাকবে, যেমনভাবে উদ্যাপিত হবে বাঙালির স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামের গৌরব । কারণ বাঙালির স্বাধীনতার ইতিহাসে বেগম ফজিলাতুন নেছা মুজিব এক অপরিহার্য অনুষঙ্গ।

This immortal line is not merely poetic ornamentation; it is an eternal truth of human civilization. When history recalls the name of a great leader, the contribution of the woman standing silently by his side deserves equal recognition. For behind many victories, struggles, and achievements in history lies a silent strength—a mother, a wife, a comrade.
In the history of Bangladesh, that silent strength is Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib.
Today, on her birth anniversary, we do not merely remember the wife of a great leader; we honor a noble woman who sacrificed her life, dreams, and happiness to play a unique role in shaping the history of a nation.
In accordance with the prevalent customs of the society of that time, she was married to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at an early age. With the passage of time, that young girl, Renu, became the greatest source of trust in Bangabandhu’s life. She never sought to share political power; instead, she chose to be a beacon of courage for a fighting soul.
Whenever Bangabandhu was repeatedly imprisoned while leading the Language Movement, the Six-Point Demand, the Mass Upsurge, and the struggle for independence, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib quietly fulfilled an extraordinary responsibility. Bangabandhu spent a significant portion of his political life behind bars. During his prolonged absence, Bangamata not only managed the household but also stood by the party activists, instilling courage, inspiration, and mental fortitude in them. During crucial political crises, her home turned into a safe haven of motherly affection and trust for the leaders and workers.
Bangamata observed the political situation with profound wisdom. When necessary, she encouraged party members in light of Bangabandhu’s political vision and directives, playing a crucial role in maintaining the momentum of the movement. She understood that this was not merely a struggle for one man’s freedom, but the liberation fight of an entire nation. Thus, she never placed personal suffering above national interest.
At the same time, she demonstrated deep affection, responsibility, and warmth toward the members of Bangabandhu's family. She did not merely shelter her children from the pain of a father’s absence; she nurtured patriotism, ideals, discipline, and self-sacrifice within them. A shining example of this is People’s Leader Sheikh Hasina, who embodies the fearless fighting spirit of her father and the motherly devotion and self-sacrifice of her mother. Amid boundless uncertainty, financial hardship, constant surveillance, and political pressure, she managed the family with steadfast resolve, ensuring Bangabandhu would not have to worry about his family's future while in prison.
History bears witness to how Bangamata's patience, wisdom, and courage empowered Bangabandhu during numerous critical junctures of his political life. Remaining away from the spotlight, she was one of the silent architects of history. She adopted Bangabandhu’s struggle for independence as her own.
Even while held captive by the Pakistani occupation forces during the Great Liberation War of 1971, she did not break down. She prioritized the nation’s independence over her personal safety. Her patience, self-sacrifice, and mental strength remain a glorious chapter in the history of the Liberation War.
However, the cruelest chapter of history unfolded on August 15, 1975. Along with the architect of independent Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangamata also fell victim to the brutal assassination by the conspirators. Through her life, she proved that she who is a companion in struggle is also a companion in sacrifice.
In today’s Bangladesh, as we discuss women’s leadership, empowerment, and self-dignity, Bangamata’s life stands as a shining ideal before us. She proved that leadership does not always mean delivering speeches from a stage; history is often created through silent sacrifice, patience, wisdom, and selfless devotion.
On her birth anniversary today, let our pledge be to build a Bangladesh where every woman receives honor, dignity, equal opportunity, and rights; a nation where patriotism, honesty, humanity, and moral excellence form the core foundation of national life.
Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib was not just the wife of Bangabandhu; she was his courage, strength, inspiration, and a silent beacon in realizing the dream of an independent Bangladesh. Just as her legacy remains unfading in the pages of history, Bangamata’s contributions will remain deeply relevant and remembered with respect across centuries, just as the glory of the Bengali liberation struggle is celebrated. For in the history of Bangladesh’s independence, Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib is an indispensable pillar.
