In an effort to counter the impact of Western sanctions, Russia has offered to sell liquefied natural gas (LNG) to South Asian countries, including India, at discounts of up to 40 percent. Through this initiative, President Vladimir Putin aims to further expand Russia's energy exports across Asian markets.
According to analysts, amid continued volatility in the global energy market, the proposal could significantly reduce energy costs for import-dependent countries such as India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Lower-priced LNG could also have a positive impact on industrial production, electricity generation, and fertilizer manufacturing across the region.
However, experts caution that several challenges remain, including existing international sanctions on Russia, payment mechanisms, transportation logistics, and the negotiation of long-term supply agreements. Despite these obstacles, they believe that if competitively priced energy supplies can be secured, the initiative could strengthen South Asia's energy security while also providing a boost to regional economic growth.
