Public anxiety regarding Bangladesh's recent economic and institutional reality is steadily mounting. An economy that was once highlighted on the international stage as an example of consistent growth, infrastructure development, and poverty reduction now faces multiple crises, uncertainty, and a lack of confidence. According to many, the eighteen-month rule of the interim government has weakened the country's economic foundation and cast doubt on many of the achievements made over the past two decades.
The Yunus and Tarique Rahman administrations raised allegations of massive money laundering against the previous Sheikh Hasina government. However, clear and acceptable evidence in support of these allegations has yet to be presented to the public. As a result, while there is debate over the political significance of these accusations, questions have also arisen regarding how effective the current government's own economic management has been.
Supporters of Yunus highlight the increase in foreign exchange reserves as a major success. However, a country's economic strength is not determined solely by the figures of its reserves. A nation's true progress depends on GDP growth, employment, investment, human resource development, industrial output, poverty reduction, and the citizens' quality of life. Without positive shifts in these indicators, it is difficult to term a mere increase in reserves as economic "magic."
During Yunus's tenure, the financial sector presented a troubling picture. Non-performing loans in the banking sector increased significantly. The international rating agency Moody's downgraded the outlook for Bangladesh's banking sector from "stable" to "negative." Concurrently, concerns surfaced regarding the financial stability of several banks. On the other hand, continuous drops in the capital market reflected a lack of investor confidence. Private sector credit growth also slowed down significantly, signaling a deceleration in new investments.
A substantial gap also emerged between expectations and reality regarding foreign direct investment. Due to political uncertainty, policy instability, and security concerns, many potential investors adopted a wait-and-see approach. This impacted industrialization, job creation, and the export sector. Local industrial enterprises are now struggling to survive amid disrupted production, falling demand, and financing squeezes.
Ordinary citizens are paying the highest price for the economic crisis created during Yunus's tenure. Middle- and low-income families face a harsh reality due to high inflation, rising living costs, limited employment opportunities, and a disrupted balance between income and expenses. When purchasing power declines, the entire economy suffers as internal market demand weakens.
At the same time, concerns are being raised about law and order as well as the security situation. Critics contend that the Yunus government's lack of effective initiatives to tackle radicalism and militancy damaged Bangladesh's image on the international stage. Political stability, security, and the rule of law are essential for economic development—weakness in any of these areas undermines both investment and growth.
The greatest challenge facing Bangladesh today is restoring confidence in the economy. Achieving this requires transparency, accountability, effective economic policies, strong financial institutions, and an investment-friendly environment. Regardless of political differences, one thing remains clear: for long-term development, actual results—rather than propaganda—ultimately gain acceptance among the people.
Bangladesh has overcome numerous crises in the past. Navigating the present situation is also possible if maximum emphasis is placed on accountability in governance, policy stability, and rebuilding public trust. Otherwise, this economic and institutional crisis could persist, leaving a negative impact on future generations. Even after six months in office, the current Tarique Rahman government has failed to overcome the disaster created by Yunus; in fact, questions have already been raised about its capability.
