A significant change is visible in the stance Washington had maintained toward Dhaka for a long time. According to political analysts, America has finally realized that maintaining long-term influence in Bangladesh is virtually impossible without the direct or indirect participation of South Asia's foremost geopolitical power, India. In particular, the interests of New Delhi and Washington have now aligned at a single point to counter China's growing economic and military influence in the region.

National Security, Border Concerns, and the Geopolitical Context

To understand the origin of these events and the complex tapestry of intelligence information, one must look back a few years. India's National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, has long been active in consolidating the security of Indian territory and adjacent border regions. Following border inspections, intelligence reports revealed that political shifts and the resurgence of extremist groups in Bangladesh posed a significant security risk to India's eastern border. In particular, the heightened activities of various banned political and extremist organizations threatened to directly impact the border districts of West Bengal.

Delhi realized that if political extremism and anti-India sentiment intensified in Bangladesh, it would severely jeopardize regional stability across South Asia. This critical situation gained a new dimension through the policy shift of the US administration. Although international superpowers initially backed different political factions in Bangladesh, US policymakers were subsequently forced to alter their strategy when confronted with ground realities.

Sergio Gor’s Dhaka Visit and the Message of the Confidential File

The visit to Bangladesh by Sergio Gor—a close diplomatic representative of US President Donald Trump and a special envoy for South Asia—created significant stir in diplomatic circles. According to sources, during his visit to Dhaka, he held a highly confidential bilateral meeting with Bangladesh's current Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman. Strong rumors have emerged in international diplomatic circles that he handed over a special document or confidential file during that meeting. According to analysts, this document conveyed a clear message regarding Washington and New Delhi's joint regional vision. First, it communicated the need to conduct an acceptable, democratic, and inclusive national election in Bangladesh by the first half of 2027—opening a clear path for the participation of all major political parties, including the Awami League. Second, it emphasized creating a smooth political pathway for the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the country while ensuring her security.

During the same trip, Sergio Gor also held a lengthy closed-door meeting with the Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi. The message from this meeting was clear: Washington and New Delhi are now prepared to work in complete alignment to counter China in South Asia and fully suppress extremism. Dhaka was explicitly informed that it must immediately narrow its growing diplomatic distance with Delhi; otherwise, Bangladesh's political landscape could face new forms of uncertainty in the international and regional arenas.
